•Students will be able to define andragogy
•Students will be able to list the 6 principles of andragogy
•Students will be able to identify what kind of model andragogy is
Andragogy is a theory of adult learning that describes learning as a process model of inquiry rather than the handing off of information.
Andragogy is guided by six principles or assumptions:
The need to know
The learner's self-concept
The role of the learner's experience
Readiness to Learn
Orientation to Learning
Motivation
Please watch the video to the right for more information on the six principles of Andragogy:
Andragogy is a process model. Its elements can be described as follows:
Preparing the learner
Includes providing info, setting expectations, prepare participation, and etc.
Establishing a climate conducive to learning
Creating a physical space that doesn't distract or impede learner from their education (i.e. well lit rooms, comfortable chairs, good acoustics)
Creating a class culture that encourages intellectual discourse, inquiry, respect, and self-reflection
Creating a mechanism for mutual planning
Involving learners to planning process which increases commitment to learning through self-direction
Diagnosing the needs for learning
Establishing the competencies learners need to meet in order to be successful outside the classroom
Formulating program objectives
Content that will satisfy the needs for learning
Designing a pattern of learning experiences
Creating activities for learners to experience or prompts for learners to apply an experience to in order to learn
Conducting these learning experiences with suitable techniques and materials
Being a facilitator guiding learners through their individual educational experiences as opposed to traditional teaching where learners are given exactly what the teacher wants them to learn
Evaluating the learning outcomes and rediagnosing learning needs.
Gauge the progress of learners and look for areas of improvements
