Intro

EDT 8140 - LMS and Evaluation

This evaluation is to compare the following functions of 2 learning management systems, Canvas and Desire2Learn (D2L). The evaluations are accompanied by walk-throughs of the specific function.

1. Change "Gradebook" Settings. Create Electronic Gradebook Categories & Items (Integrated with Dropbox, Quiz, and Rubric)

2. Create Dropbox Assignments, Turnitin.com, and Grading Rubric

3. Create Quiz Questions in Question Library

4. Create Electronic Grades for Quizzes, Create Quiz, Modify Quiz Settings, and Add Randomizing Question Set to Quiz

5. Conduct Quality Check (Demo Student Drop Off Assignment and Instructor Grade Assignments)

After evaluating the above functions for each LMS, I will make a professional recommendation on the better LMS of the two.

Canvas Eval.

Change Gradebook Settings:

Pros: Easy to navigate to and work
Cons: Limited number of settings

Create Electronic Gradebook Categories & Items:

Pros: Intuitive and in one place, auto-updates gradebook
Cons: n/a

Cons: Question bank not easy to get to, and unable to return directly to quiz that was being edited

Change "Gradebook" Settings. Create Electronic Gradebook Categories & Items (Integrated with Dropbox, Quiz, and Rubric)

Change Gradebook Settings:

Pros: Lots of options in the settings
Cons: Not to clear as to where to go for some settings due to large amount and odd naming.

Create Electronic Gradebook Categories & Items:

Pros: Simple process
Cons: Items not auto-generated when assignments are made

Pros: Creating Dropbox Assignments with Turnitin.com enabled is a straightforward process

WEEK 3 LMS RECOMMENDATION

1. Change "Gradebook" Settings. Create Electronic Gradebook Categories & Items (Integrated with Dropbox, Quiz, and Rubric): Canvas

All functions were so easy to get to and mostly in one place

2. Create Dropbox Assignments, Turnitin.com, and Grading Rubric: Canvas

D2L rubric was so much more difficult to create

3. Create Quiz Questions in Question Library: D2L

Canvas Question Banks were to much work to access and return from

4. Create Electronic Grades for Quizzes, Create Quiz, Modify Quiz Settings, and Add Randomizing Question Set to Quiz: Canvas

All functions were grouped together better than in D2L

5. Conduct Quality Check (Demo Student Drop Off Assignment and Instructor Grade Assignments): Tie
