Workplace-Based Assessments
Workplace-based assessments are used to document trainee development and provide structured feedback throughout the BST Ophthalmology Programme.
The programme uses:
Case-Based Discussion (CBD)
Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS)
Multi-Source Feedback (MSF)
Each trainee should complete one Multi-Source Feedback cycle annually.
A complete MSF cycle should include feedback from 10 respondents comprising:
2 Specialists / Associate Specialists
2 Doctor colleagues
2 Nurses
2 Allied Health Professionals
1 OA
1 Administrative / Support staff
Respondents should be individuals who have worked sufficiently closely with the trainee to provide meaningful feedback on professional behaviour, communication, teamwork, reliability, clinical responsibility and overall professional performance.
Where a respondent feels they have had insufficient contact with the trainee to comment meaningfully, they should select Unable to comment where appropriate.
OSCAR Assessments
Clinical Supervisor Report (end of rotation)
Educational Supervisor Review
Annual Review/Progression
Assessment should support development and progression rather than function as a numerical checklist alone. This matches your framework, which emphasises overall competency, professionalism, clinical judgement, procedural safety, communication and increasing independence.
