The Brunei Basic Specialist Training (BST) in Ophthalmology Programme is a structured three-year postgraduate training pathway designed to develop safe, competent and progressively independent ophthalmologists within Brunei Darussalam.
The programme provides supervised clinical training across the major ophthalmic subspecialties, together with structured teaching, workplace-based assessment, surgical and procedural training, audit and quality improvement, research, teaching experience and professional development.
Training is organised across three levels:
R1 – Foundations of Ophthalmology
R2 – Core General Ophthalmology
R3 – Advanced General Ophthalmology & Transition Year
The programme is adapted from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists OST Curriculum 2024 and contextualised to Brunei’s healthcare system, service needs and available clinical exposure.
BST is intended to provide a strong foundation in comprehensive general ophthalmology while preparing suitable trainees for further Advanced Specialist Training, fellowship training or recognised overseas specialist pathways. It is not intended to confer consultant specialist equivalence or subspecialty accreditation.
Clinical rotations are structured within the departmental training cycle, with formal supervision, workplace-based assessments, end-of-rotation Clinical Supervisor reports, annual Educational Supervisor review, multi-source feedback and progression review forming part of the trainee’s portfolio.
The programme normally recruits to two annual intake points, aligned with the departmental rotation cycle, with anticipated commencement in February and October, subject to training capacity and approved posts.
