The Brunei Ophthalmology Basic Specialist Training (BST) Programme recruits doctors who demonstrate the clinical ability, professionalism and potential to develop as specialist trainees in Ophthalmology.
Selection is based on an applicant’s overall suitability and potential for specialist training, rather than any single achievement.
The programme has two scheduled intakes each year: February and October.
Trainees undertake structured clinical rotations under consultant supervision, with each rotation lasting approximately four months.
The annual rotation cycle is:
February – May
June – September
October – January
New trainees normally commence the programme in either February or October. Recruitment is subject to the availability of approved training places and programme capacity.
The staggered intake system provides continuity within the department and allows trainees at different stages of experience to work alongside and learn from one another.
Applications normally open approximately three months before the relevant intake.
For the October intake, applications will usually open in July, with shortlisting and interviews taking place during August and September.
For the February intake, applications will usually open in November, with shortlisting and interviews taking place during December and January.
Exact application opening and closing dates, interview dates and the number of available training places will be published for each recruitment cycle.
Applicants are encouraged to review the eligibility and selection criteria below before submitting an application.
Applicants should normally:
Hold a recognised primary medical qualification
Hold full registration with the Brunei Medical Board, or be eligible for such registration
Have satisfactorily completed a recognised Foundation Training Programme or demonstrate equivalent foundation-level clinical competencies
Have completed a minimum of four months of clinical experience in Ophthalmology
Demonstrate satisfactory clinical performance
Be in good professional standing
Demonstrate appropriate professional conduct
Demonstrate a clear commitment to postgraduate training and a career in Ophthalmology
Doctors completing Foundation Year 2 may apply for the next available intake provided that all eligibility requirements will be met before commencement of BST.
Equivalent experience and alternative training pathways may be considered on an individual basis by the Ophthalmology Training Committee.
The minimum ophthalmology experience requirement ensures that applicants have had sufficient exposure to the specialty to make an informed decision about pursuing Ophthalmology as a career.
During this period, applicants should develop familiarity with the ophthalmology clinical environment, basic ophthalmic assessment, acute eye care, outpatient practice and the professional responsibilities associated with the specialty.
Completion of an ophthalmology placement does not guarantee selection to BST.
Applicants should demonstrate:
Genuine and sustained interest in Ophthalmology
Understanding of the nature and demands of ophthalmology training
Evidence of learning and professional development relevant to the specialty
Appropriate career motivation
Understanding of the aims and structure of the Brunei Ophthalmology BST Programme
Applicants should demonstrate:
Safe clinical practice
Appropriate clinical judgement for their level of experience
Ability to assess and initially manage patients appropriately
Recognition of personal limitations and appropriate escalation of care
Ability to prioritise clinical responsibilities
Commitment to patient safety and quality of care
Applicants should demonstrate:
Effective communication with patients, families and colleagues
Ability to work constructively within a multidisciplinary team
Respectful and professional behaviour
Reliability, responsibility and integrity
Ability to receive and respond appropriately to feedback
Commitment to continued learning and reflective practice
Evidence of satisfactory performance during previous clinical training
Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate participation or interest in:
Audit and quality improvement
Teaching
Evidence-based medicine
Research
Clinical presentations
Courses, conferences and other educational activities relevant to Ophthalmology
These activities contribute to the overall assessment of an applicant’s portfolio but are considered in the context of career stage and opportunity. Applicants early in their postgraduate careers are not expected to have extensive academic achievements.
Applications are submitted electronically using the online application form published for each recruitment cycle.
Each recruitment cycle will specify:
Number of available training places
Application opening and closing dates
Required supporting documentation
Shortlisting arrangements
Interview dates
Programme commencement date
Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their application is complete and submitted before the stated closing date. Late or incomplete applications may not be considered.

Shortlisting may consider:
Eligibility for the programme
Clinical experience and previous performance
Evidence of commitment to Ophthalmology
Professional development
Audit and quality improvement
Teaching and academic activity
Overall quality of the application
Shortlisting criteria may be reviewed between recruitment cycles according to programme requirements.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a structured selection interview.

Clinical reasoning and patient safety
Communication and teamwork
Professionalism
Ability to reflect, learn and respond to feedback
Audit and quality improvement
Teaching and professional development
Career goals
Candidates are not expected to have extensive specialist ophthalmology knowledge beyond that appropriate to their current level of training.
The exact interview format may vary between recruitment cycles and will be communicated to shortlisted applicants.
Applicants will be ranked according to their overall performance in the selection process.
Offers will be made according to:
Overall selection performance
Availability of approved training places
Training capacity
Programme and service requirements
Successful applicants must fulfil all programme entry requirements before commencing BST.
Appointment to the programme does not automatically guarantee progression through subsequent stages of training. Progression is dependent upon satisfactory performance and fulfilment of the programme’s assessment and progression requirements.
Successful applicants will receive a formal offer of a training position by email and will be required to confirm acceptance within the stated timeframe.
A minimum of four months of clinical ophthalmology experience is required before commencing BST.
Applicants with additional ophthalmology experience remain eligible to apply. Previous experience will be considered within the context of the applicant’s overall training history but does not automatically confer exemption from any component of the BST programme.
Doctors who have completed Foundation Training or equivalent postgraduate clinical training outside Brunei Darussalam may be considered where their previous training can be demonstrated to provide equivalent foundation-level competencies.
Eligibility and equivalence will be assessed by the Ophthalmology Training Committee and relevant Ministry of Health training authorities where required.
All eligible applicants will be considered according to the published selection criteria for the relevant recruitment cycle.
Selection is based on suitability and potential for ophthalmology training, together with available programme capacity.
Recruitment information for each February and October intake will be published on this website when applications open.
