The Basic Specialist Training (BST) in Ophthalmology Programme forms part of the postgraduate medical training pathway for doctors pursuing a career in Ophthalmology in Brunei Darussalam.
It is designed to provide a structured period of foundational specialist training following completion of Foundation Training, while preparing suitable trainees for further specialist development.
A typical training pathway may include:
Foundation Training Years 1 and 2
↓
Basic Specialist Training in Ophthalmology
R1 – Foundations of Ophthalmology
R2 – Core General Ophthalmology
R3 – Advanced General Ophthalmology & Transition Year
↓
Further specialist development
This may include:
Advanced Specialist Training
Recognised overseas specialist training
Fellowship training
Relevant postgraduate examinations and qualifications
↓
Progression towards senior specialist and consultant-level practice
BST is therefore intended to provide a structured intermediate stage between Foundation Training and more advanced specialist training.
The programme aims to:
Develop competence in comprehensive general ophthalmology
Build safe and progressively independent clinical practice
Develop core ophthalmic procedural and surgical skills
Strengthen professional, academic and teaching capabilities
Support progression through recognised postgraduate training pathways
Prepare trainees for further Advanced Specialist Training, fellowship or overseas specialist training
Career progression within Brunei Darussalam's medical service may also depend on factors including:
Completion of recognised postgraduate qualifications
Progress through relevant medical officer and senior medical officer grades
Completion of approved specialist training
Satisfactory clinical performance
Professional standing
Fulfilment of prevailing Ministry of Health and government service requirements
Specific promotion criteria and career grades are governed by the relevant national medical service and Ministry of Health policies and may change over time.
Completion of BST Ophthalmology does not in itself confer consultant specialist status or subspecialty accreditation.
The programme provides structured foundational specialist training and prepares trainees for further progression within recognised specialist training pathways.
