Juggling and running a marathon are hard activities to undertake by themselves, but putting them together? That is exactly what senior Garyth Page Violette has chosen to do for his senior independent study project (SISP).
During senior year at Mass Academy, all seniors are required to complete a SISP during which they dedicate a minimum of 100 hours to a topic or activity of interest. For Page Violette, his chosen activity was running while juggling.
“I wanted to choose a SISP that is challenging and allowed me to be active. I knew I wanted to run a marathon but I felt like it was missing an element,” said Page Violette. “I was initially thinking of running it backwards but then I thought I could use my juggling skills instead.”
So far, Page Violette has spent around 35 hours on this project.
“I am currently working on increasing my mileage. Right now, I run around 9 miles while juggling,” he said. “I am planning on running a half-marathon in December while juggling pins.”
A senior independent study project also requires all seniors to have a mentor. This mentor must be an expert in the topic or activity that the senior is engaging in.
“I emailed the guy who has the world record for running a marathon while juggling the fastest,” said Page Violette. “He emailed me back and has been giving me some good tips. He’s helped me with developing good running form, deciding what balls to juggle, and helping me find gloves so I can continue practicing throughout the winter.”
Page Violette is looking to diversify the materials he uses while running.
“I might try to juggle eggs while running a marathon in the spring. Someone would have to follow me in a cart or something to catch the eggs that I drop though,” he said. “But I would be the first person to run a marathon while juggling eggs so that would be cool.”
Looking forward, Page Violette is hoping to run a marathon sometime in the spring. We wish him luck and are excited to see what he does next!
