On September 15, a much-needed breeze settled after weeks of uncharacteristically hot weather in Worcester. With fall upon us, Mass Academy students prepared for a night full of autumnal festivities, laughs, and good times. With nostalgic video games, delicious food, and bright music, every student was able to enjoy a break from academics. The festival gave the seniors an opportunity to catch up with one another and the juniors used the event to unwind from the stresses of the week.
Acknowledging that the fall festival was a grand organizational task, the senior student government (StuGov) outsourced games from the class. Through the combined efforts of StuGov and the student body, StuGov was able to use a WiiU to play Just Dance and Wii Sports, with the former being a highlight of the night.
In the classrooms, classic games like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros were set up. Mario Kart was especially popular among the juniors. Junior Erica Dong proved to be formidable, expertly
controlling her car, drifting into power-ups, and sabotaging her opponents.
The seniors preferred Super Smash Bros, a game that straddles the line between mashing buttons and calculated strategy. Besides their individual interests, juniors and seniors were able to bond with one another, which is often hard to do with their busy schedules.
Just Dance was by far the most popular game, with two versions (2014 and 2019) brought to the festival. The songs most definitely got the players’ blood pumping, with enthusiastic dance movements required The Pac-Man theme song and “Bang Bang” required great dance ability. Even students who thought they were not great dancers crushed it on the dance floor. Friends bonded as they danced together and new friendships flourished.
The event also incorporated the ever-popular Pizza Friday. Orders came in droves, and the senior student government intends to use the earnings toward the combined junior-senior prom in the spring. Ensuring funds for the dance while providing slices of cheesy perfection from Boomer’s Pizza Sub & Deli was a win-win. Other food provided included several varieties of chips and cookies.
As night fell, the students sang “Maps” by Maroon 5 with passion, reflecting on the journeys they’ve taken and dreaming of where they will go next.
