At Mass Academy, clubs work a little differently from other schools. Most clubs run for only one term so that students can experience a variety of activities. Clubs are an important part of how students learn to manage their time. Many students participated in a lot of extracurriculars at their sending schools. Still, because of the high after-school workload of a Mass Academy student, it’s crucial that students carefully choose their activities.
Every Monday afternoon of A term, thirteen students participated in Dr. C’s returning elective: Biotechnology. In Biotechnology, students learned lab techniques ranging from micro pipetting and incubating to DNA plasmid techniques and electrophoresis. Students in Biotechnology had a variety of prior lab experience, from having only taken Chemistry Ito researching in a lab over the summer. Many students in Biotech will be able to apply the skills they learned to their independent STEM projects. Biotech will be running again in D term with priority given to previous students.
On Tuesdays, students participating in the Computer-Aided Design (CAD) elective met to learn about digital three-dimensional modeling. In this elective, juniors were taught to use SolidWorks, a popular application for CAD, to make designs escalating in complexity.
Juniors and seniors on the Math Team met in the brickyard on Wednesdays to prepare for the first of four meets throughout the school year. Each meeting was dedicated to a different topic that related to a different round of the meet. Math Team is a full-year elective.
Near the end of A Term, juniors were invited to join the Artificial Intelligence (AI) club. The AI club is led by Charles Tang and Joseph Yu, two Mass Academy seniors. Many students are using AI in their STEM I projects and benefited greatly from this opportunity.
In B term, students will participate in Programming Team, Knitting and Crocheting, Drop-In Meditation, and Creative Engineering and Design., as well as any continuing clubs. The Brickyard Beat will also continue into B Term. Anyone interested in joining can email Isabella Palit, Riley Harn, or Mrs. Small for more information.
