On December 2nd, Mass Academy hosted its annual semi-formal at WPI’s Higgins House. Having chosen a Tangled-inspired theme for the event, the junior student government was charged with elegantly decorating Higgins House to bring the movie to life. Of course with Higgins House as the location, the job was already half-done, with the building’s secluded but cozy nature, wooden pillars, and rustic appeal making itself iconic amongst kids who are used to school cafeterias as dance locations.
Students were also allowed to bring up to three outside guests, a welcomed decision to meet new people especially with Mass Academy’s small class size. Still, the class officers had their work cut out for them as there were important preparations needed to be done - tickets had to be sold, a DJ needed to be contracted, and food had to be supplied.
However, the hard work of the class officers paid off, affording Mass Academy students’ and their guests an unforgettable night. According to Mass Academy junior Derek Desrosiers, the dance was “fun for all students and peers who went, giving a chance for everyone to relax before the holiday break.”
A big thank you to the junior class student government advisors, Mrs. Chase and Mrs. Burns, for being involved and dedicated to the event, and for their guidance. Planning an event like this for the entire school is no easy task, especially with a team that is still new to the environment. Their leadership shouldn’t go unnoticed.
December is a busy time of year at MAMS, but it’s events like these that remind us that there’s more to high school than just our studies. Not only was semi-formal a great way to bond and de-stress, but undoubtedly it’s where everyone made some amazing memories.
