Journey of the Little Mermaid

Journey to those fathoms below in your own galleon ship and experience an under-the-sea adventure with your Little Mermaid friends!

Exterior and Queue

Located next to Pinocchio's Bold Voyage in Fantasy Harbor is a magnificent replica of Prince Eric's castle. Similar to the Magic Kingdom replica, the castle is set against high sea cliffs. After passing a stone statue of Ariel posed on her rock (as seen in "Part of Your World (Reprise)") that has a plaque bearing the attraction's name, guests will wind their way around the first half of the queue on Eric's private shoreline to the left of the castle. Littered among the detritus on the beach are driftwood and some flotsam — shattered planks of wood, a torn ship sail, some wooden crates with its (unusable) contents spilling out, an angel statue that used to be a ship's figurehead, etc.

A new extension of the castle, themed as a Mediterranean beachfront terrace, serves as the indoor queue for the attraction. On this terrace, guests will find some of Eric's seafaring equipment: anchors, sails, chains, etc. Passing by these, guests will enter a hallway and a short flight down the stairs that will lead to the castle's cellars.

A scale model of Prince Eric's castle showing the terrace extension as seen in the unbuilt Disneyland Paris version. In this version of the attraction, the terrace will be located to the left of the castle instead of the right.

The castle's cellars, as seen in the Magic Kingdom version of the current Little Mermaid attraction.

The cellars will be similar to its Magic Kingdom counterpart. This part of the queue will have vaulted ceilings with paintings of mythological sea monsters with matching poems, exposed rockwork, arched portals, and hanging lanterns for lights. As guests wind their way around the cellar queue, they will see various common cellar items: casks of wine, barrels filled with produce (fish, mostly), kitchen items, etc. From time to time, they will hear faint sounds of the castle's inhabitants (except for Eric, Max, and Grimsby) upstairs: some servants gossiping, Chef Louis preparing meals in his kitchen and periodically chasing an escaped sea animal, and Carlotta humming to herself as she goes around the castle cleaning.

Upon reaching the end of the queue, guests will see a rocky cavern, a continuation of the sea cliffs found outside. Some sea creatures (crabs, starfishes, etc.) can be found lazing about on the small strip of sand that's next to the river where the ride vehicles await guests for boarding.

Ride Vehicles

In a Disney first, Journey of the Little Mermaid will be using a hybrid ride system that will allow guests to experience a traditional water dark ride (Pirates of the Caribbean, Na'vi River Journey, etc.) and a thrilling suspended rail ride (Peter Pan's Flight) at the same time.

Design-wise, the ride vehicle will resemble a short wooden sloop-type galleon, complete with a single mast, sails, and some riggings. It will be a combination of the boats used in Pirates of the Caribbean and the ones used in Peter Pan's Flight. The Pirates ride vehicle design will be used so that the boats can travel in the traditional manner, while the Peter Pan's Flight one will be used to hide the inner structural work that will allow the boat to be carried on the suspended rail system, allowing guests to be flown above or "swim" in the undersea show scenes.

Ride Experience

For this attraction, much inspiration has been taken from the unrealized Little Mermaid-themed attraction that was planned for Disneyland Paris in the early 1990s. However, a balance will be struck between the narratively-driven 1990s version and the current musically-driven 2010s version of the ride to allow fans of the movie to be immersed in both the story and songs of the beloved film.

Similar to how the unrealized Disneyland Paris version was designed, both the surface world and undersea scenes are placed on two different levels of the show building to further the illusion that guests have traveled above and below the surface throughout the ride. At the ground level of the show building, all "surface world scenes" are staged on massive aquarium tanks which allows the boats to behave in the traditional water dark ride setting. At the basement level, beneath the aquarium tanks, are the "undersea scenes," where the boats now behave as a suspended dark ride.

As guests depart from the boarding station, they will enter a dark and windy cavern, continuing the environment that they departed from in the load/unload area. This is the galleon graveyard, where destroyed and battle-scarred galleons are abandoned by the humans left to rot. As foreboding strains of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" play in the background, the guests will hear thunder crash and lightning strike from outside the cavern, signaling a storm approaching. From time to time, guests will be able to see a pair of glowing yellow eyes belonging to Flotsam and Jetsam following their boat from under one of the wrecked ships.

Ariel and Flounder swimming to the surface, with Sebastian (not depicted) following them. Snippets of their conversation can be heard by the riders as they turn the corner from the galleon graveyard.

Eric, Max, and Grimsby on the top deck of the ship.

Suddenly, guests will hear a splash of Ariel's tail on their left-hand side and some giggles from her and Flounder as they exit the galleon graveyard.

ARIEL: Come on, Flounder! I can see his ship is already docked.
FLOUNDER: Wait up, Ariel! My fins aren't as long as your tail!
SEBASTIAN: Not on my watch you aren't! Ariel, get back here!

As they turn the corner into the calm open sea (the storm seems to have not caught up with them), guests will Prince Eric's ship on their left-hand side. As a soft melody of "Part of Your World" plays, the prince and his dog can be seen looking out to the water contemplatively, while Grimsby looks at Eric worriedly.

ERIC: That voice, Grimsby, I have to find that voice who saved my life!
GRIMSBY: Perhaps it was all in your head, sire.
ERIC: No! It was real. I'll find her and thank her for saving my life.
MAX: (barks in agreement)

Circling past Eric and his ship, guests will see Ariel perched on a rock behind the ship, with Sebastian and Flounder swimming beside it. Ariel looks at Prince Eric's ship dreamily.

ARIEL: Someday, I'm going to be part of his world.
SEBASTIAN: Ariel, listen to me. The human world, it's a mess. Life under the sea is better than anything they've got under there!

As the music changes to the melody of "Under the Sea", the boat goes down the drop and "dives" under the calm waves. This is perhaps one of the most thrilling parts of the attraction, as the ride vehicle changes from its water dark ride configuration to a suspended rail one, allowing the guests to "swim" along in each show scenes. The drop is where the PhotoPass camera is located, capturing the guests' reactions as they plunge underneath the water's surface.

The boat turns around the corner and a lively and animated scene is revealed. As Sebastian sings "Under the Sea", the sea creatures can be seen participating in the revelry: a small school of fish dances the conga, a pod of lobsters swing to the song's beat, a fish plays with the tentacles of two octopuses tied together as a musical instrument, starfishes spin, etc. Amidst all this celebration, Ariel and Flounder can be seen at the end of the scene, preparing to sneak away.

After leaving a clueless Sebastian behind, the boat moves into Ariel's secret grotto where she keeps her treasures. Rows upon rows of human artifacts dot the space, similar to how the grotto is presented in the film. The boat swims around Ariel sitting on a perch next to a statue of Prince Eric. Flounder can be seen floating next to her. As Ariel examines an open music box that features two dancing figures, she asks Flounder

ARIEL: Have you ever seen something so wonderful in your entire life?

As the boat continues to swim around the grotto, Ariel begins to sing a few lines of "Part of Your World". Guests can also see Sebastian (who managed to track down Ariel) hiding and poking around Ariel's treasures.

ARIEL:
Look at this stuff, isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
Wouldn't you think I'm the girl, the girl who has everything?

Suddenly, a furious King Triton appears to the surprise of Ariel and Flounder.

KING TRITON: Ariel, what is all this? You know that we are not to encounter the human world at all costs!

King Triton begins to raise his glowing trident at the grotto and prepares to destroy it as the boat hastily leaves. Guests will hear Ariel's impassioned pleas and the destruction of the grotto as they exit the scene.

ARIEL: Daddy, no! Please, stop it!

After exiting Ariel's now-destroyed grotto, the boat moves into a darker and murkier environment. The previously bright blue water turns into a darker green, signaling the attraction's turn into the darker side of the storyline.

Ariel can be seen on the ground recovering from crying over her beloved treasures. Flotsam and Jetsam then emerge from the shadows and lurk above her, telling her that all will be well if she visits Ursula the Sea Witch, their mistress.

JETSAM: Don't be scared.
FLOTSAM: We represent someone who can help you: Ursula!
ARIEL: The sea witch? (a beat) Take me to her.

Near the end of the scene, Sebastian and Flounder look on in shock.

SEBASTIAN: Ursula?! She's a monster! Come on Flounder, we must follow her!

As the boat turns around the bend, Ursula's lair, housed inside the skeletal remains of the Serpentine monster, emerges into view. The boat moves forward through the gaping maw of the monstrous creature. A garden of agonized polyps fills its maw, writhing and groaning in pain, as "Poor Unfortunate Souls" plays in the background. Clearly, it's not the best welcome party one could have gotten.

The boat presses on into the belly of the beast and the main part of the lair. At the center of the scene is Ursula, standing at her cauldron singing a few lines of "Poor Unfortunate Souls". A floating orb above the cauldron shows scenes of Ariel and Eric together. Ariel herself could be seen standing next to the cauldron, clearly mystified by the pictures being shown in the orb. Sebastian and Flounder could be seen in the corner of the lair being gagged by both Flotsam and Jetsam.

URSULA:
I admit that in the past I've been a nasty
They weren't kidding when they called me, well, a witch!

As the boat circles them, Ursula then turns to Ariel. By way of projections, a glowing golden contract appears before Ariel, stipulating the conditions of the sale.

URSULA: To remain human, darling, you've got to get dear ol' princey to fall in love with you. That is, he's got to kiss you a kiss of true love. If the sun sets on your third and last day before he does, you turn back into a mermaid, and — you belong to me.

Ursula's laughter, as well as Ariel's vocalizations (Ursula's fee for the transaction), echo through the room as the boat exits the scene.

On the guests' left-hand side, Ariel could be seen bathed in a swirling golden vortex as she is transformed from a mermaid into a human. Behind the transforming Ariel, Flounder and Sebastian could be seen holding each other in shock. As the boat moves away from the scene, Flotsam and Jetsam appear in the corner before the lift hill to observe Ariel's transformation.

JETSAM: If only there were something we could do...
FLOTSAM: But there is something...

The boat then ascends the lift hill and returns to the surface.

After the boat emerges from underneath the surface into another cavern, guests will see Scuttle standing on the left-hand side of the boat. A lush curtain of vines could be seen covering the mouth of the cavern to hide the next scene.

SCUTTLE: Yo, Flounder! Any kissing?

The vine curtain then parts to reveal the "Kiss the Girl" scene. Set in a tranquil, mossy lagoon with twinkling fireflies and the moon shining in the distance, a now-human Ariel and Eric can be seen inside their rowboat. Eric and Ariel are seen periodically leaning in to kiss each other before he sheepishly backs away and leaving her disappointed. Encircling their boat are Flounder and other fishes creating several fountains by spouting water from their mouths. Several land and water creatures (including Scuttle squawking along) try to add to the romantic atmosphere as Sebastian croons the song.

SEBASTIAN AND OTHERS:
Sha la la la la la
My oh my
Look like the boy too shy
Ain't gonna kiss the girl

Sha la la la la la
Don't stop now
Don't try to hide it how
You want to kiss the girl
You've got to kiss the girl

As the boat leaves the lagoon and two lovers behind, the tranquil atmosphere is suddenly interrupted by a storm. Ursula's voice bellows throughout the lagoon, demanding reparations.

URSULA: Three days are up, dearie. Time to pay up!

The scene shifts from the lagoon to a stormy open ocean. Thunderclaps and lightning strikes, as well as climactic battle music, fill the scene as several shipwrecks appear to arise from the water. Ariel, in her mermaid form, could be seen clinging to a rock with Flounder, Sebastian, and the polyp version of King Triton as the wind and rain pick up. Eric, on the other hand, can be seen at the opposite side of the room on the top deck of a shipwreck with a shattered prow.

ARIEL: Eric! Eric, look out!

Suddenly, a gigantic figure of Ursula, now wearing Triton's crown and wielding his trident, emerges from below and laughing maniacally.

URSULA: (laughing) Now I am the ruler of all the ocean! Bow to my power!

As lightning strikes, Eric appears to steer the ship into Ursula and impale her. She then appears to be defeated, when her skeletal form projected onto her figure. Ursula screams one last time, as the boat leaves for the final scene.

The boat now enters the final scene of the attraction. As the triumphant refrain of "Part of Your World" plays, the kingdom rejoices in the union of Eric and Ariel and the victory of true love. The ocean is now much calmer, with nothing but blue skies and smooth sailing up ahead for everyone.

On the boat's left-hand side, guests will see Eric and Ariel's wedding ship with the newly-wed couple dressed in their wedding finery. The couple is seen on its top deck, waving to the merfolk and some sea creature friends below. Scuttle can also be seen flying above the ship. On the right-hand side near the end of the scene are the now-restored King Triton and his daughters, also waving back to Eric and Ariel. Triton then raises his glowing trident to form a rainbow above the barge.

As the music comes to an end, the boat enters the underground caverns once again and returns to the unload station, where guests will disembark and proceed to Scuttle's Gadgets and Gizmos, the gift shop exit for the attraction.
