THE WRONG POTION- Excerpt - written by Gordon Blitz
Tagline: The potion gave her everything she wanted... except the truth.
Int. SUBURBAN KITCHEN-morning-ROWENA (40 years old, tousled black hair) and her daughter CIRCE (17 years old, wearing Goth clothing and makeup). Rowena is stirring contents in a cauldron.
CIRCE
Why is it when I ask for a potion, you never say yes? If it's anyone else, you do it and don't even charge.
ROWENA
You're old enough to make your own potions.
CIRC
You never taught me how!
ROWENA
If you were a real Witch, you'd have the instincts. You'd know. it's something you're born with.
CIRCE
Give me a break!
ROWENA
What is it you want?
CIRCE
To make Lilith my girlfriend. Right now it's like I'm invisible to her. I think about this girl all the time.
ROWENA
Do you even know if she's a lesbian?
CIRCE
Why does that matter? It's a magic love potion.
ROWENA
It doesn't work that way. A potion can't change your gender or sexuality.
CIRCE
You're such a hypocrite. You just don't want to do it.
ROWENA
Listen, if you really like this Lilith, you can make her get interested in you. That's what I did with Morgana.
CIRCE
And look how that turned out.
ROWENA
It's not my fault that she found a younger partner.
CIRCE
Did you even try to put a curse on her? Fight for her?
ROWENA
Circe, I don't want to get into this with you. You're like a broken record.
CIRCE
I hate it here. I wish I could fly away.
Circe looks at the broomstick by the kitchen door and walks toward it.
ROWENA
Don't you dare!
CIRCE
Why should I listen to you? You've made my life miserable. Everyone thinks you're a good Witch, but I know what you really are.
ROWENA
That's it! You're grounded!
CIRCE
Make me!
ROWENA
Sit down! I need to tell you something.
CIRCE
Not the sex talk!
ROWENA
No. You have to understand that being a witch is internal. It's not wearing Goth clothing or making potions or even using a broomstick.
Rowena touches her own chest followed by touching Circe's chest.
CIRCE
But I don't feel that, and I want to. It isn't fair!
ROWENA
Have you been doing mindful meditation? That's where you become one with the universe.
The buzzer goes off on the stove.
ROWENA (CONT'D)
Oh, shoot! The potion’s done. I have to do the finishing touches. Maybe you can help me.
Rowena takes Circe's hand and leads her to the cauldron. She hands Circe the large spoon used for stirring the mixture. Circe smiles as she stirs. Rowena goes to a cupboard and pulls out a small jar of spices.
ROWENA (CONT'D)
Now this is the last ingredient. And you have to be gentle as you pour it into the cauldron.
CIRCE
Don't you have to check the Recipe Book of Spells to make sure you have the right measurements?
ROWENA
I've memorized it. Oh, maybe I glance at the book occasionally to jog my memory.
