REROUTED Excerpt - written by Gordon Blitz
Tagline: At a tense funeral, a guilt‑ridden doctor is confronted by the estranged daughter of his former patient—only for both to discover that a tragic phone‑system glitch, not negligence, caused them to miss the man’s final desperate calls, forcing them to face the truth, their shared remorse, and the fragile possibility of forgiveness.
INT. FUNERAL HOME
JEFFREY (40, boyish-looking) is sitting at the back during a funeral service. Sitting next to him is a woman, ESTAIRE (30, blonde).
ESTAIRE
How did you know Manfred?
JEFFREY
He was my patient.
ESTAIRE
Oh, I didn't think doctors showed up at funerals. Especially if they caused the death.
Jeffrey starts to get up, but Estaire pulls him down.
ESTAIRE (CONT'D)
Don't you dare leave.
JEFFREY
What are you saying? I was not responsible!
ESTAIRE
So you say. Why are you really here?
JEFFREY
For the family.
ESTAIRE
I doubt that. It's guilt, isn’t it?
JEFFREY
No! I did everything I could to save Manfred.
ESTAIRE
This is what I don't understand. You were the physician in charge, and yet you never answered your phone.
JEFFREY
That was not what happened.
ESTAIRE
Please, don't lie to me.
JEFFREY
Who are you to tell me what I did or did not do?
ESTAIRE
Someone who knows the truth!
She leans in closer to Jeffrey.
ESTAIRE (CONT'D)
Manfred called you at 2:14 AM.
JEFFREY
That's impossible! Why are you saying that?
ESTAIRE
You got the call, and you ignored it.
Jeffrey freezes.
JEFFREY
I never got it.
ESTAIRE
Then tell me why he dialed you instead of the resident on call.
JEFFREY
How do you know that?
Estaire doesn't answer. She just watches him. Jeffrey's breathing grows shallow. He starts to leave again.
ESTAIRE
Sit down!
JEFFREY
I'm leaving.
ESTAIRE
If you walk out now, everyone here will know that you're guilty.
Estaire takes out her iPhone and shows it to Jeffrey who sits back down.
ESTAIRE
I have his iPhone. See how it shows your
number.
JEFFREY
This doesn't prove anything, and like I said, I never received the call.
ESTAIRE
You really thought you could just up and leave just now?
JEFFREY
I don't owe you a goddamn thing!
