THE UNPLANNED MIRACLE Excerpt - written by Gordon Blitz

Tagline:  Love doesn't always follow the plan 

INT-BEDROOM-NIGHT-The set is dimly lit, and a bedside lamp is turned on flooding the scene with ambient light. Two girls-CLAIRE (22 years old, large-boned, short hair, masculine-looking, flat chested, transgender) and JUDY (22 years old, smaller, long wavy hair, feminine) are sitting up in bed.

 CLAIRE

I can't believe, I'm no longer a virgin!

JUDY

And you thought it would never happen.

CLAIRE

You were so patient.

JUDY

Two months’ worth of “patient”!

CLAIRE

But it was worth it, wasn’t it? And me changing those hormones really helped, too.

JUDY

I never thought I'd have to take cold showers waiting for you!

They both laugh. Claire gets up from the bed.

JUDY (CONT'D)

Listen, I've got a test tomorrow. Got to get some sleep, or I'll be a basket case.

CLAIRE

Oh, yeah; I have a term paper due.

Claire puts moisturizer on her arms.

CLAIRE

Oh, before I forget. We need to get a gift for Jessica and Erica's baby shower.

JUDY

Do we have to go?

CLAIRE

Yes. It's a big deal. The first in our group to adopt or use in vitro.

JUDY

I'm surprised about the timing. Didn't they just get their PhD's, and they got married right away?

CLAIRE

So what. ­They wanted a child. I think it's sweet.

JUDY

Oh, god! Don't get any ideas.

CUT TO-SAME BEDROOM-A MONTH LATER MORNING-Claire is sitting up in bed. We hear Judy throwing up in the bathroom. Judy enters the bedroom.

CLAIRE

Are you okay?

JUDY

Does it sound like I'm okay? That's the third time I've thrown up this week. Something’s wrong!

CLAIRE

It's all that crap you eat. No wonder you throw up.

JUDY

Don't give me the third degree. I just can't take the time with my schedule to eat healthy...

Judy runs back to the bathroom, slams the door, and throws up again.

CUT TO-DOCTOR's OFFICE-A week later- DR. LILA SANDERSON (60, short gray hair, wearing a white lab coat; kindly and understanding) is sitting at her desk. Claire and Judy are sitting facing her.

DR. SANDERSON

Looks like you're about eight weeks.

CLAIRE

What!

JUDY

That's impossible. I haven't had sex with a man.

CLAIRE

This is crazy! This can't be happening! I could never in a million years get you pregnant!

Dr. Sanderson looks at her notes and looks at Claire.

DR. SANDERSON

You're transgender, and you never had gender confirming surgery although you’re on hormone therapy.

CLAIRE

But I was told it couldn't happen.

DR. SANDERSON

First off, you are correct. It’s unlikely that a female transsexual would be able to impregnate another woman, but it does happen. I can prescribe some morning sickness remedies for the vomiting and nausea, and also prescribe some prenatal vitamins.

JUDY

This is too much for me to take in. I need to talk this out with Claire.

Dr. SAnderson

That's perfectly understandable.

CLAIRE

Thank you.

Claire and Judy leave the office silently and when Claire tries to hold Judy's hand, Judy pushes her away.
