THE HEIST OF THE RUBY SLIPPERS Excerpt - written by Gordon Blitz
Tagline: When Tasha steals the ruby slippers from a museum for her physically challenged sister, it sets in motion a series of unusual events.
INT. SMITHSONIAN MUSEUM in EMERALD OZ EXHIBIT ROOM - NIGHT
Glass case with the Wicked Witch's hat, Judy Garland photos, and DOROTHY'S RUBY SLIPPERS.
A SHADOW creeps across the floor. A figure steps forward. TASHA (28, wiry, anxious, hoodie up, carrying a small duffel bag) kneels by the case producing a compact laser cutter. The glass melts away in a perfect oval. She grabs the slippers with gloved hands, but as she tries to stuff them into her bag, Tasha gets an electric shock, and she drops the slippers on the floor.
TASHA
OW! What the . . .
She bends down to the floor, throws her duffel bag over the slippers, and she is able to get them into the bag without getting another shock.
AN ALARM BLASTS.
Tasha runs out of the museum before she is caught.
CUT: INTERIOR KITCHEN
A well-lived-in suburban kitchen. KAREN (smiling, eyes filled with curiosity) is sitting in a wheelchair as Tasha runs in. Tasha throws the duffel bag on the floor.
KAREN
Where have been? I’ve been waiting for you to come home and cook dinner. You could at least have called.
TASHA
I brought you a present. It’s going to make
you walk again.
KAREN
Oh, please! Another one of those miracle cures.
TASHA
I went to a lot of trouble get these for you. Even
burnt my fingertips.
Tasha pushes the bag toward Karen.
TASHA
Go ahead; look inside, but don’t touch them.
Karen opens the bag and looks inside.
KAREN
Oh, my god! Are these the ruby slippers? Where
did you get them?
TASHA
The Smithsonian
KAREN
What? You stole them?
TASHA
Borrowed them.
KAREN
You could have gotten arrested.
TASHA
It was worth it.
KAREN
Why would you do something so crazy?
TASHA
Because I promise you that when you put them
ton, you’ll be able to walk.
KAREN
But why would these work? It’s a goddam movie.
Get real girl.
TASHA
I am being real. I just know these shoes are
going to help YOU!
KAREN
You’re such a dreamer. Okay I’ll try them on.
TASHA
Just, be careful. You might get a shock.
KAREN
If it can get me out of this chair and able to walk,
I don’t care.
Karen slowly pulls the shoes out of the bag and holds them in her hands and stares at them.
TASHA
Wow! No electric shock. Well, put them on.
KAREN
Now I'm scared. I'm worried. What if they don't work.
TASHA
Oh come on. What have you got to lose?
Karen picks them up and bends down to remove her shoes. As she puts one ruby slipper on her foot, she stops.
TASHA
Well, how does it feel?
KAREN
I don’t feel anything yet.
After she puts the second slipper on, she smiles.
KAREN
I think I know what’s wrong. I have to stand and
click the heels. That’s what Dorothy does, right.
Can you help me?
Tasha helps Karen out of the wheelchair and holds her up.
KAREN
I can’t move my legs. How am I going to click
the heels?
TASHA
Can I do it for you?
KAREN
Just push my ankles together. I don’t want you
to get another shock.
Karen’s breathing is shallow as Tasha uses her hands to push on Karen’s ankles. The sound of a click is heard. Karen closes her eyes, and when she opens them, she tentatively tries to walk. At first, she stumbles, and Tasha prevents her from falling.
T ASHA
Are you going to be okay?
KAREN
This is like a baby taking their first steps. I'm starting
to feel my legs.
Karen takes a step forward, steadying herself. She is
able to walk a few steps. She starts to cry as she
walks.
KAREN
This is a miracle. Thank you. You're the best sister.
TASHA
Don’t just say that. I still feel responsible.
KAREN
We’ve gone over this before. It was an accident.
But Tasha begins disappearing. Starting with her feet, she is slowly dissolving into the air.
KAREN
What’s happening? Where are you?
Tasha looks panic-stricken as her chest dissolves and
before her head disappears, she stares at Karen.
TASHA
I can’t see. I love you, Karen.
Karen starts to cry. She walks over to where Tasha was standing.
KAREN
(screaming)
Where have you gone?
