Wrap-Up

Summary

In summary, there are four main models of Blended Learning: rotation, flex, a la carte, and enriched virtual. Each model provides educators with flexibility for personalized implementation and provides students with effective and enriched learning experiences. Blended Learning is an instructional framework that can be implemented at any education level, K-12 and beyond.

The Blended Learning Teacher Competency Framework provides educators with standards to help drive quality instruction and implementation of this instruction model.

At the start of this PLM, you were asked to view this IMAGE and answer these three questions:

What are different ways in which student learning is taking place?

What are the teachers' roles in the image?

What are the students' roles in the image?

Take a moment to reflect on your initial answers. After everything you have learned throughout the module, have your answers changed? Does your perspective of the roles of the teachers and students look different? Now write your reflections on your reflection sheet.

Embarking on the Blended Learning journey is not for the faint of heart but it is so worth the freedom and quality learning that it will provide for students!

Next Steps

Creating lessons to utilize in a Blended Learning environment requires teachers to think about how to plan lessons to ensure student success. The why, how, and what of a Blended Learning classroom will help shift learning from the traditional whole group teacher-led instruction to becoming 21st-century learners capable of learning from rigorous, relevant, and effective instruction.

As you make the shift to Blended Learning in your classroom, here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • What should students be able to do once the lesson is complete?

  • What are you willing to allow students to control?

  • What lessons can be completed synchronously?

  • What lessons can be completed asynchronously?

  • In what ways can you individualize student learning (Tucker, 2018; Tucker, 2022b)?

The following suggestions will also help you as you move toward a Blended Learning classroom environment:

  • Replace teacher-directed directions with a digital version, such as video instructions.

  • When possible, create an automatic grading assessment such as a Google Form.

  • When planning lessons, identify which can be taught digitally versus those that need to be taught face-to-face.

  • Your curriculum is your roadmap; use it.

  • Your team is there for support and guidance, do not be afraid to ask for help or work together.

  • Flexibility and Communication are critical and essential.

  • Be ready to make adjustments when necessary (Tucker, 2018; Tucker, 2022b).
