Enriched Virtual Model

What is the Enriched Virtual Model?

Imagine you open a classroom door expecting to see a group of students hard at work and the instructor diligently assessing student needs and the classroom is empty of students. The instructor is there but seems to be deep in a conversation with someone on their computer. It would leave you wondering if you had walked into the wrong room.

Maybe the classroom you walked into only had seven to ten students either working on a group assignment or one-on-one with the instructor.

The classroom you entered may be full of students, but everyone seems to be working on something different and at a different pace. The instructor may be meeting with a student in person, over a computer, or creating digital lessons.

The Enriched Virtual Model is defined as not requiring students to attend traditional brick and mortar schools daily. Students will work mostly virtually and attend classes in person very infrequently. Attendance may be required to receive enrichment opportunities, meet with instructors for help or necessary updates, complete group work, or receive enriched learning experiences. Students must be self-directed learners and able to stay on task and complete assignments in a timely way without someone keeping track of them and staying on top of them (White, 2019).

Role of the Teacher:

  • Provide support to students on a flexible and as needed basis

  • Provide instruction for students on a flexible and as needed basis

  • Assess, analyze, and synthesize student and data

  • Develop unique and individual learning plans for each student

Role of the Student:

  • Be accountable for actions

  • Stay up to date on all work/assignments

  • attend school when required

  • ask for assistance when needed

Benefits:

  • Provide flexibility with scheduling

  • Provide off-campus learning experiences

  • Gives students a chance to explore their passions

Challenges:

  • Considered to be the disruptive blended learning model due to the control students have over their learning

  • Ensuring students attend the required on-campus learning days

Considerations for preparing to implement the Enriched Virtual Model:

  • Students must have a learning environment that is a cohesive experience for their success.

  • There must be a plan in place for student accountability and how to keep students working and successful.

  • All face-to-face meetings within the school building must be beneficial for all students.

  • Students must have access to the necessary technology to be successful and productive in this blended model.
