Individual Rotation Model
What is the Individual Rotation Model?
The Individual Station Model, allows students to rotate through stations on an individual basis (White, 2018). The thing that makes the individual model unique, is that students may not necessarily complete each station activity but are assigned individual schedules by a teacher and/or software program to meet the needs of each student individually (White, 2018). Role of Teachers:
Prepare mini lessons and/or activities for each individual station
Uses data from assessments, observation, or other sources to assign "playlists" to every student
Watches for misconceptions and provides immediate feedback to students
Allows students to access an example to check their work either electronically or in a whole group setting
Scaffolds instruction so that students have checks for understanding placed within each station
Role of Students:
Work through assigned stations on their "playlist"
Take immediate feedback from the teacher to correct their mistakes
Reflect on progress towards mastery at each station by completing progress monitoring checks
Apply learning from individual stations to create authentic products with their peers
Benefits:
Places students at the center of learning
Allows each student to work at their own pace using a custom "playlist"
Provides variety and flexibility in instruction, which translates to increased engagement and motivation
Offers varied modalities of instruction catering to learning styles of all students
Challenges:
Requires a significant shift in instructional design and pedagogical approach for teachers
Requires a significant amount of planning and coordination on the part of the teacher
Does not provide as much flexibility as other station models, as each student is given a fixed schedule
Considerations for preparing to implement the Individual Rotation Model:
Use multiple modalities to increase student engagement, every station does not have to involve technology.
Students' individual station assignments should be based on assessment data, observation, knowledge of the student, and other data sources.
Stations can include a wide range of activities and tasks from virtual mini lessons to discussion board posts to traditional reading, writing, and math assignments such as practice problems or read and respond.
