Advanced Human Genetics and Counseling
The present course entitled "Advanced Human Genetics and Counseling," offers a comprehensive exploration of human genetic disorders, population genetics, and the fundamental principles of genetic counseling. Designed as a continuation of earlier studies, this semester deepens students’ understanding of the classification, causes, and consequences of genetic disorders, while also examining the role of genetic variation in shaping populations.
The course emphasizes both theoretical foundations and hands-on practice, enabling students to analyze genetic disorders with precision, apply the Hardy-Weinberg principle to real-world population data, and critically evaluate the ethical, legal, and social issues surrounding genetic testing and counseling. Special focus is given to the development of problem-solving skills, case-based learning, and the application of genetic knowledge in clinical and community contexts.
By the end of this course, students will be equipped not only with a solid grasp of advanced genetic concepts but also with practical counseling techniques essential for guiding individuals and families through genetic health challenges with accuracy, empathy, and responsibility.
Unit-wise Learning Modules
This course consists of three theory units and one practical unit (Course Credit: 3+1). You may access the complete course details through the link provided below.
Unit I
Unit II
Unit III
Practical laboratory exercises to reinforce theoretical concepts
Survey of Complex Disorders: Conducting a survey or literature review on a selected complex genetic disorder prevalent in a population.
Case Study: Pedigree Analysis: Analyzing pedigrees of individuals affected by a genetic disorder to determine inheritance patterns and genetic risk factors.
Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE) Simulation: Using simulation software or models to demonstrate and analyze allele frequencies under Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium conditions.
Genetic Counseling Simulation: Role-playing scenarios where students act as genetic counselors, discussing genetic test results, inheritance risks, and family planning options with hypothetical patients.
