Demonstration Project on #CurbYourCarDay #BikeToWorkDay #GoAllWaysDay!!!
"Great! It was nice and dare I say essential to have some sort of barrier there to remind cars of the bike lane."
"I felt much safer biking with the cones on the road."
"I would love a protected route all the way to the hospital, I would ride to work"
"Great! I wish a protected bike lane were permanent"
As people ride into Hanover along Lebanon Street, they travel around a curve known as "Sand Hill". The paint of the bike lanes around this curve is typically worn off. Would adding cones help people riding feel more safe?
Working with the Department of Public Works, the Hanover Police Department, and Planning we create a DEMONSTRATION PROJECT FRIDAY to celebrate BIKE TO WORK DAY and CURB YOUR CAR DAY!
We invited people to test CONED BIKEWAYS!
And then they let us know how it went, with a thumbs up or down, by emailing us at HanoverBikeWalk@gmail.com, or by taking our short 3 question survey!
CONED BIKEWAYS
WERE A HUGE SUCCESS!
Bicyclists and drivers liked the separation, and wanted more permanent infrastructure with skinnier cones.
"Great and safer"
"Drove through. Enjoyed this change."
"Great! Feels safer for cars and bikes!"
"I saw it driving by and wished it was permanent for the days I ride my bike."
If the lanes were separated... "I would bike to the hospital and to do the Etna loop much more often."
Click PLAY on the video above to see what it's like to ride through the cones during the day!
Click PLAY on the video below to see what it's like to ride through the cones at night!
"Install a permanent protected bike lane or turn the sidewalk into a MUP!"
"Much better!!!"
"As someone who has been hit by a car riding a bike before, any physical barrier between rider and large vehicle is a good idea"
"I would love a protected route all the way to the hospital, I would ride to work"
"I support safer bike lanes everywhere in the upper valley please"
"More protected bike lanes would improve this town a lot."
"It's a start! The network really would need to be expanded to be effective and encourage more biking for transportation."
"It's a great reminder to vehicles to give space to that lane."
"The actual lane still needs to be wider. Right by the Hanover Coop, the lane gets precipitously narrow. "
"Cones tipped over INTO the bike Lane ... Put up bike friendly post that are affixed to the pavement."
"Felt safe. Less likely that a car would cut into my path."
"Would love to see more permanent bike lanes throughout town."
"I definitely felt more protected as I went around the bend where the paint is worn off "
Try out one of these rides!
SHORT (<3 miles) There and back from The Green!
MEDIUM (<8 miles) Out on Wheelock -> back on Greensboro
LONG (<20 miles) Out on Wheelock -> add in the Dogford Loop! -> back on Greensboro
Without the cones...
"Cars often cut the corner where bikes ride."
"Somewhat dangerous."
"Sketchy. People drive in the bike lane all the time. They’re unaware of bikes in general."
"Perfect for a car dominated area"
"Dangerous blind corner"
"It is dangerous"
"I almost always walk my bike on this segment due to feeling unsafe. I felt more protected today!"
"People drive into the bike lane"
"A bit treacherous but not as bad as some other roads"
