Part 1

Introduction: Kübler-Ross Stages of Grief model

In the previous page, DESPAIR was highlighted as a common experience of the elderly, as they reflect back on their lives. An elderly person might feel despair if he or she thinks their life was unfulfilling and meaningless.  A person in despair would grieve for what went wrong in their lives and the losses they encountered.

Examples of losses:

•physical (i.e. disability),

•social (i.e. loss of identity, financial resources),

•psychological (i.e. loss of self-esteem/self-worth)

•spiritual (i.e. loss of faith)

The following Kübler-Ross Stages of Grief model, aims to give you a better understanding of what a person goes through when grieving any sort of loss.

The following video provides an inside look into how depression in elderly affects quality of life

Thus far, you should have a better understanding of the psychological state of older adults. In the following page, we will be applying what you have learnt, in the Health Belief Model, to understand health decision making of the elderly.
