This is a very simple application of how to use the TTM to counsel or aid patients elderly who are not responsive to treatment advices due depression. This little video gives a very simple example of hwo to shift the patients from stage to stage.
In this lesson we try to apply our knowledge of Sociology through the areas of Gender Socialisation to see how we can adapt the TTM to our patients. From sociology, we learn about how individual patients are programmed to behave in a certain way. Such social programming can result in decision makings that might be beneficial or detrimental to individual patients.
This is the reason why health or medical counselling cannot be made in a vacuum but must be mapped to an understanding of our patients' social background is crucial towards helping the patients shift their behaviour. Once an understanding of the social background of the patients background is developed further, you may then find that a tool like the TTM may become a lot more useful.
These are additional resources that will help you understand more about loneliness and its impact on health of the elderly. While these are not compulsory, it might be important for you to look at them since understanding social isolation and loneliness may help you to move your patients along the Transtheoretical Model of Behaviour Change:
Defining successful aging: a tangible or elusive concept? (Martin et al, 2015)
Social isolation: It could kill you. (Novotney, 2019)
Social isolation, loneliness in older people pose health risks. (National Institute on Aging, 2019)
