Major types of character builds and key primary skills have a “codex” that your character can level to unlock new abilities and enhancements. You start to unlock these upgrades when you have the relevant codex and the required skills to use that codex.
For example, the Bestiary gives tamers bonuses specific to taming, but for experience to apply to the Bestiary you have to have animal taming and animal lore at a high enough level to control the pets that level a bestiary. Any character can have a Bestiary in their backpack, it just won’t do anything – gain experience or apply bonuses – unless those requirements are met.
Other codex requirements are more straightforward, such as a weapon codex, which requires 80 tactics and 80 of the relevant weapon skill (macing, fencing, swordsmanship, archery).
All farming builds capitalize on at least one codex, but your character will probably have two or more. For example, that tamer with the Bestiary will likely have a Grimoire to boost their magery or a weapon’s codex of some kind to boost their weapon skill. The combination of codices and your skills open up opportunities for new synergies, and most codices have multiple configuration options to further specialize your build or to adapt to the scenario at hand.
Read the wiki for each codex to fully understand its potential, but here are your options and their basic requirements:
Bard Codex (80 musicianship skill or higher + 80 or higher in Discordance, Peacemaking, or Provocation)
Thieves Codex (80 stealing skill or higher + 80 in either snooping, hiding, or stealth)
Wizard’s Grimoire (80 magery skill or higher + 80 or higher in meditation or evaluating intelligence)
Summoner’s Tome (80 magery or higher + 80 spirit speaking or higher)
Poisoner’s Kit (80 poisoning skill or higher)
Weapon and Parry Codices In order to use a Weapon Codex, players must have at least 80 Tactics and 80 in their weapon skill (Arcane, Archery, Fencing, Fishing, Macing, Parrying, Swordsmanship, and Wrestling)
– An exception to this is the Arcane codex which requires 80 Wrestling along with Arcane skill
– In order to use a Parry Codex, players must have at least 80 Tactics or 80 Wrestling and 80 in their Parrying skill
Taming Bestiary/Affinity System (Taming skill to control creatures with a 50 taming requirement or higher)
Potion Codex (Players need at least 80 Alchemy to utilize the benefits of the Potion Codex)
Healer’s Codex (Players need at least 80 printed skill in Healing and Anatomy to utilize the benefits of Healers Codex)
Trap Kit (Players need at least 80 Tinkering and 80 Detecting Hidden to utilize the benefits of the Trap Kit)
Big takeaways for this category are:
Codexes in all of their forms give you bonuses and sometimes new abilities
Once you have a codex in your inventory, the only requirement for upgrading it is experience gain (no additional resources acquired)
Your build will probably require two codices
Codices can only gain experience or use abilities/bonuses if you meet the minimum skill requirements for that codex
Your codex can be configured in multiple ways, and you can reset that configuration without penalty at any time (with a small cooldown or mana cost)
Codexes are blessed, but even if you lose a codex, all of your progress is saved to your character so all you need to do is put another codex in your bag to recover the benefits
