This is a turf-cutter. Allen Valleys used this type of machine to prepare a long section through school playing fields. It cuts down and under, so all you have to do is lift out the turf and put it to the side. This was to precede a mini digger.
You can do the same thing with with spades to make a neater job when digging through lawned areas. If you slice down the edges of your proposed trench, then the turf can be pulled of with the digger.

Ingleton had to respond to a complaint about previous work on this embankment creating a mud slide. They invented a system of retainer boards so that the soil didn't migrate down the hill. Each sector could be worked on as a unit and each one compacted in turn.
