The Coalition offers a certain degree of creativity and freedom when it comes to making a character, however, you should always aim to represent the average man or woman drawn from the diverse mosaic that is the Coalition and the wider Great Lakes region itself. When making a character, it is important to ensure that they fit compellingly in a scene with other members of the Coalition.
Many characters which do not fit the Coalition aesthetic suffer from similar flaws.
It is recommended you try to avoid these mistakes, which are usually:
Using an ill-fitting or unserious face
Using awkwardly bright or harsh skin tones
Using overscaled hair combinations with poor textures or colours
Unrealistically scaling accessories or the body
Unrealistic reflection of a character's status*
*i.e. an overly clean and tidy Marked Man or unusually dirty or informally dressed Constable
In addition to some basic rules below, at the top of this page there is a collapsible section containing documents which will help you to avoid these mistakes and create a convincing character design.
Keep your character simple! You could use a basic 2D custom and a small array of accessories, with the bulk of a character's 3D rigging being put towards something like webbing and gear rather than hair & headwear.
Do not majorly scale up hats to fit hair combos! Use either a helmet on/helmet off hair variant or design one hair combo with the shape of helmets in mind. Another thing to note is that due to ATF's lighting and the Coalition's darker color palette, desaturated hair colours fit better than others.
Do not use any torso or package that does not conform with the default R15 body!
Default R15 packages that are not made by Roblox should never be used (i.e. anything but the default torso and "ROBLOX Girl Torso"). The exception to this rule is skinned R15 package limbs, which are permitted as long as they do not cause any rigging conflicts.
Characters must fit the Coalition's rules on character scaling! Characters which exceed the limits of height, weight and depth will come under scrutiny, and it is important to remember that all ATF8 characters should follow similar proportions to each other with few exceptions.
Height:
At minimum, 90 (5'3)
At maximum, 107 (6'3)
Width & Depth:
At minimum, 80
At maximum, 100
These are hard rules of character creation which must be followed.
Staff members will tell you to update your character's design if they believe you to be breaking these rules.

It is important that your character looks like a more stylised version of a Roblox character. In the case of all Coalition characters, you have a wide degree of options with which to reflect an individual's background; they can be put-together, formal and clean, or they could be the polar opposite—especially in the case of Marked Men who are expected to be grungy, rugged and informal. It is very important that you, as a faction member, make sure that your character's design accurately reflects their backstory in correlation to the Coalition. For example, if you had a serviceman who was freshly transferred from Hamilton, they would be incredibly well-uniformed, prideful of their appearance, perhaps clean-shaven or sporting a stylish beard or mustache, and keeping their hair somewhat short or neatly tied back. Inversely, a rook who hails from the slums of Bargetown would appear more dirty and uncouth with unkempt stubble and greasy or matted hair.
Members of the government are expected to maintain a level of cleanliness whilst servicemen and rooks may appear more dirty and rough. Their uniforms are held to a much higher standard than those of the Gold Leaf Army, and they are subject to further scrutiny in their grooming, which should be reflected in their design. It is important to note that the Gold Leaf Army, while less kempt than the government, still holds themselves to basic regulations on appearances and hygiene. Servicemen shouldn't be covered in dirt with an overgrown head of hair.
Below are some examples of Coalition characters which the staff team have picked as near-perfect examples of what should be made to reflect the faction. These examples and tips should help you to uniquely customise your character while still adhering to the Coalition's aesthetic.

When making a mutant character for the Coalition, it is vital to remember that mutants are not just humans with unnatural skin tones. Most mutants are born with deformities and growths which distinctly separate their appearances from humankind—these range from benign lumps, blemishes and growths on the skin, to extra or missing features such as eyes or noses. One particular example of the extremes of mutant character design would be ThePressWarrior's Outcast Compendium. Not all mutants are expected to appear so egregiously deformed, however, this resource contains a plethora of techniques and notes on making a convincingly deformed mutant character.
An important aspect of mutant character design is considering how their deformations might impact their status in Bargetown. For example, a mutant with lesser deformities would be far more likely to find themselves a position in the government, while one with disgusting growths and lumps across their face would struggle to find tenure anywhere other than the Gold Leaf Army or Marked Men.
While you are encouraged to explore your mutant character's malformations, always keep in mind that over-the-top and obnoxious mutations are very likely to compromise your character's aesthetic integrity and may make them look like a troll character.
Below are some examples of mutant characters curated by the Coalition staff team to serve as inspiration for character design.

Universal hair textures are commonplace in modern character design, however, many end up using textures that are too vibrant or have unnatural hair colours which fail to meet the Coalition's aesthetic. To help new players find the best hair textures, we've created a small list which can be accessed in the "Quick Access Links" section at the top of the page. These textures should work with most hair meshes, but some hairs have abnormal texture maps which leads to universal hair textures not working correctly when applied to them. In most cases, using a flipped hair texture (a universal hair texture which has been flipped horizontally) will usually fix this problem.
As a general rule of thumb, hairs should not be majorly clipping into helmets or hats, but helmets and hats should never be unnaturally scaled up to fix this. Instead, hairs should be resized to fit beneath hats and not the other way around.
Below are two image carousels dedicated to masculine and feminine hairs curated by the Coalition staff team for players to use. These may require scaling to fit beneath most helmets and hats. These specific hairs are not mandatory; they are resources to aid you in character design.
