Prevention:
Be aware of your surroundings. When surfaces are snowy or icy, walk only on treated areas.
Consult the MA Office of Labor worksheet on Preventing Employee Injury from Student Behavior
Take SafetyCare training when offered by the district
Procedure for reporting:
If you are injured while on the job, make sure that you:
Alert the building administrator
See the school nurse if there is blood, bruising, or if you hit your head
Fill out the Workplace Injury Report and send it to HR within 48 hours. Ideally submit this to your building principal the same day as the injury occurs.
The supervisor should sign, and email it to HR as a PDF. If possible, send the same day as the injury. HR will then forward to the Town Counsel's Office. The Town Counsel's office handles all workers compensation for the Town and Schools. They will communicate with the injured staff member with details about the claim and a claim number.
Medical Care;
There is no preferred medical site for treatment.
Go to the emergency room at a hospital for fractures, deep wounds, eye injuries, or chemical exposure.
The district will cover the cost of medical care that remains after insurance for injuries that occur during work.
Worker's Compensation:
Staff who qualify for worker's compensation are paid a portion of their salary and may use percentages of sick days to make up the difference to maintain full pay during absence period.
Damage to Personal Property:
If your own property is damaged (phone, glasses, clothing, vehicle, etc), talk to your principal about reimbursement.
Unit A members have up to $1000 personal property reimbursement in the contract for accidental damage while on the job.
Save receipts and submit them to the principal after being approved for reimbursement.
