Welcome to Ajab Shahar

Come, o swan
Into a wondrous town
Behold the formless king
On whom is spread

Kabir says this city that promises many wonders is not far away - it is within. The medieval mystic poets of our land were fiercely iconoclastic and their poems challenge the bigotry, religious sectarianism and the moral hypocrisy of their times and ours. They consistently urge seekers to turn within to find answers. Their poetry does not reject the world but moves fluidly between the outer and inner, the social and the spiritual, the body and the spirit - between the 'beautiful form' and the 'formless king' it drapes. 

Many such metaphors, images, couplets and songs from this 600-year-old wisdom tradition are found as digital fragments on Ajab Shahar - an archive of mystic poetry built over 23 years. These songs and poems have traveled across many centuries and landscapes to find their way to us; the same poem shapeshifts to appear in vastly different languages and cultures, dancing to a new rhythm. From Malwi to Sindhi, Urdu to Bengali, these poems have crossed boundaries of language, faith, and region; they move through marketplaces, shrines and village gatherings, finding new life in each retelling. 

The mystics insist on an indescribable, ephemeral truth accessed only in temporal experience and lost to language afterwards. They urge us towards an experience that renders you dumb and groundless. And yet, they keep saying 'what cannot be said'. They go on mocking and exhorting us, deploying words even while insisting that they are worthless. This is the play between the Akath (unsayable) and the Katha (the said). 

With this exhibition of the archive (a first for the Kabir Project), we mull the apparent irony of trying to freeze an amphibian and shifting tradition that insists on the futility of such efforts. We dance between two worlds: the fixed and fluid, the written and oral, the scripture and the song. Perhaps, wandering this city online or through these rooms, you may find some signposts to the city within.

ഇന്ത്യയിലും ദക്ഷിണേഷ്യയിലുടനീളവുമുള്ള ഭക്തി-സൂഫി വായ്മൊഴിപ്പാരമ്പര്യങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് ഉരുവം കൊണ്ട മിസ്റ്റിക് കവിതയുടെയും സംഗീതത്തിൻ്റെയും ഡിജിറ്റൽ ശേഖരമായ ‘അജബ് ശഹറി’ലൂടെ സസൂക്ഷ്മം സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നു ഷബ്നം വീർമാണിയുടെ ഈ പ്രതിഷ്ഠാപനം. കാലാന്തരങ്ങളിലൂടെ, സിന്ധി മുതൽ ബാംഗ്ല വരെയുള്ള നിരവധി ഭാഷകളും അതിർത്തികളും പിന്നിട്ട ശീലുകൾ അങ്ങാടികളിലും ദേവാലയങ്ങളിലും നാട്ടുകൂട്ടങ്ങളിലുമെല്ലാം ഇന്നും മുഴങ്ങിക്കേൾക്കാം. 

ഈ  മധ്യകാലപാരമ്പര്യത്തിനു പിന്നിലെ മിസ്റ്റിക് കവികളെ ഏതുകാലത്തു കേൾക്കുമ്പോഴും അവർ ആരെയും കൂസാത്ത വിഗ്രഹഭഞ്ജകരും, മതാന്ധത, വിഭാഗീയത, ധാർമ്മികകാപട്യങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയെ വെല്ലുവിളിക്കുന്നവരുമാണെന്നു കാണാം. വിമൂകവും അഭൗമവുമായ വിതാനത്തിലേക്കുയർത്തുന്ന അന്തർജ്ഞാനത്തിൻ്റെ ശീലുകൾ ആലപിച്ചുകൊണ്ട്, നേരനുഭവത്തിലൂടെ മാത്രം കരഗതമാവുന്ന ഒരു വിവരണാതീതസത്യത്തിലേക്ക് അവർ വിരൽചൂണ്ടുന്നു. ‘അകഥ് ‘ (പറയാനാവാത്തത്), ‘കഥ’ (പറയപ്പെട്ടത്) എന്നിവയ്ക്കിടയിലെ സന്നിഗ്ദ്ധതയിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിച്ച് അവരുടെ വാക്കുകളും ബിംബങ്ങളും രൂപകങ്ങളും, അവയ്ക്ക് അവർതന്നെ കൽപ്പിച്ച അർത്ഥങ്ങളെ പലപ്പോഴും നിരസിക്കുന്നു. ‘അകഥു’മായുള്ള തങ്ങളുടെ മുഖാമുഖത്തിൻ്റെ ക്ഷണമാത്രകൾ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ഗായകരും പണ്ഡിതരും ഗ്രാമവൃദ്ധരുമെല്ലാം ഒരു സജീവ പാരമ്പര്യത്തെ മുന്നോട്ടു നയിക്കുകയാണ്.  23 ലേറെ കൊല്ലങ്ങൾക്കു മുമ്പ് ആരംഭിച്ച് ഇപ്പോഴും വികസ്വരമായിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ആർക്കൈവ്, എവിടെയും തളംകെട്ടാതെ പരിണമിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു കലാപ്രയോഗപദ്ധതിയുടെ സംരക്ഷണത്തിനു പിന്നിലെ വൈരുദ്ധ്യങ്ങളിലേക്കു വെളിച്ചംവീശുന്നു. ഒരു കവിമൊഴി ഇങ്ങനെ:

Trail of Mirrors 

Continuing into this Ajab Shahar - this wondrous city of the mystics, we take you down the trails and mud paths we have walked on this journey. In these two browsing stations, you will encounter curated selections of conversations, couplets and verses from songs in the archive around a particular idea. 

The first trail is of Fakiri or ‘living freely’ - a radical state of being where many burdens (of ego delusions, material clinging and anxious attachments) are shed to achieve a state of lightness. This trail will not take you through Fakiri as an intellectual idea, but address you personally - what are the burdens you are carrying on this path, and could you, for a few minutes, put them down? 

The second trail takes you on a glimpse of the journey we have been on, over 23 years of listening, collecting, singing with and speaking to the living keepers of this poetic tradition. This is a trail of mirrors, a collection of self-reflexive moments from the archive that ask us questions, instead of answering ours.

അജബ് ഷഹർ - ഞങ്ങൾ ഏറെക്കാലം അലഞ്ഞുനടന്ന ആത്മീയാന്വേഷകരുടെ ഈ മായാനഗരത്തിന്റെ തെരുവുകളിലേക്കും ഇടവഴികളിലേക്കും ഞങ്ങൾ നിങ്ങളെ ക്ഷണിക്കുന്നു. ഈ രണ്ടു ബ്രൗസിംഗ് സ്റ്റേഷനുകളിൽ  പല തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത ആശയങ്ങളെ അടിസ്ഥാനപ്പെടുത്തിയ സംഭാഷണങ്ങൾ, ഗാനങ്ങൾ, കവിതാശകലങ്ങൾ  എന്നിവ നിങ്ങൾക്കു കേൾക്കാം. 

ആദ്യത്തെ വഴിത്താര ഫക്കീറി അഥവാ ‘സ്വതന്ത്രരായി ജീവിക്കൂ’ എന്ന വിധ്വംസകമായ ജീവിതാവസ്ഥയെ പിന്തുടരുന്നതാണ്: ആ അവസ്ഥയിലെത്തുമ്പോൾ, നാം നമ്മൾ താങ്ങുന്ന പലതരം ചുമടുകൾ - അഹങ്കാരം അതിൽനിന്നുദയം ചെയ്യുന്ന മായാധാരണകൾ, ഭൗതികവസ്തുക്കളിന്മേലുള്ള അള്ളിപ്പിടുത്തം, ബന്ധങ്ങൾ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന ആകാംക്ഷകൾ തുടങ്ങിയവ - ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് ലാഘവത്വത്തിന്റെ അവസ്ഥയിലേക്ക് ആനയിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ഫക്കീറി ബൗദ്ധികമായ ഒരാശയമല്ല ഉന്നയിക്കുന്നത്, മറിച്ച് നിങ്ങളെ അത് വ്യക്തിപരമായി അഭിസംബോധന ചെയ്യുന്നു: നിങ്ങളുടെ യാത്രയിൽ നിങ്ങൾ താങ്ങുന്ന ചുമടുകൾ ഏതൊക്കെയാണ്? കുറച്ചു നേരം. നിങ്ങൾക്ക് അവയെ താഴെയിറക്കി വെക്കാനാകുമോ?

രണ്ടാമത്തെ വഴിത്താര ഞങ്ങൾ കഴിഞ്ഞ 23 വർഷമായി നടത്തുന്ന കേൾവിയുടെയും ശേഖരണത്തിന്റെയും കൂടെപ്പാടലിന്റെയും ഈ കാവ്യപാരമ്പര്യത്തെ നിലനിർത്തുന്നവരുമായുള്ള സംഭാഷണങ്ങളുടെയും ലോകത്തിലേക്കുള്ള  ഹ്രസ്വസന്ദർശനങ്ങളാണ്. ഇത് ഞങ്ങളുടെ ശേഖരത്തിൽനിന്നു തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത കണ്ണാടികളുടെ പാതയാണ്, ആത്മപ്രതിഫലന മുഹൂർത്തങ്ങളുടെ ശേഖരമാണ്; അവ ഞങ്ങളോടുന്നയിക്കുന്നത് ചോദ്യങ്ങളാണ് ഉത്തരങ്ങളല്ല
