President's Message
We're in our second month of the year, and you probably agree, time is flying! With that said, please agree to serve on our Board if the Nominating Committee should ask you. Remember the 12th Principle from Mamie L Bass:
Altrusa believes it is not good enough to be good;
Altrusans must be good for something.
Each member must be doing the piece of work
that is hers in a way that puts her in the front ranks of accomplishment.
Mamie L. Bass, 1921

Greetings Altrusans!
I hope all is well and you are enjoying your February. I do love the seasons, but February has always been the month when I can’t help longing for Spring! I am ready for tulips and daffodils!
February 20th marks World Day of Social Justice. The theme this year is “Advancing Social Justice”. As Altrusans, we work very hard, everyday, to ensure our communities are supported by our thoughtfulness and generosity. Equal opportunities to share kindness is shared by all members throughout the year; we are a light in the darkness for so many children, families, and veterans. Unfortunately, injustices remain and it is important we recognize how and when we can help those near and far. “...advocates point out the persisting grave injustices, widespread labor insecurity, high inequality, and unraveling social contracts exacerbated by global crises. These harsh realities threaten progress made on social issues. Reinforcing institutions and policies that truly advance social justice is seen as an urgent priority”. We still have work to do and I am confident we make a difference! Please click here for more information about this year's theme.
In addition, the month of February has been remembered as Black History Month for over 45 years. President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” The Black History Month 2022 theme, “Black Health and Wellness,” explores "the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (e.g., birthworkers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc.) throughout the African Diaspora. The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well." As a club consisting of many talented women, we recognized the beauty, intelligence, and grace of all people; this is just one of the many reasons I am proud to be an Altrusan!
Please have a pleasant February and I look forward to seeing you all again soon!
Warm Regards,
Tracey

Altrusa International Literacy Challenge One Book at a Time, Part II
President Linda is continuing Immediate Past President Kathy book challenge and we want you to be a part of it. President Linda firmly believe that literacy is the number one focus for Altrusa and we want to continue to enhance that commitment. Our ultimate goal is to enhance the lives of others ONE BOOK AT A TIME! The challenge is for Altrusans to distribute one million books and/or devote 500,000 literacy service hours to our communities during the 2023-2025 biennium. So how can you participate?
Develop a signature literacy project (or expand on an existing one) that will continue to grow and develop into the future. Large and small clubs alike can participate in this challenge.
2. Assign a record keeper to keep track of the number of books you distribute AND/OR the number of service hours you spend (for example reading to children, the elderly, participating in a book exchange … something that works for you, your club and your community).
3. Carry the project over through the next club year.
4. Send your numbers (for both years) to the International Service Committee before
June 1, 2025. The easiest way to record this is to record each time you club donates books so you don’t forget any!
5. Sit back and relish in the fact that you are making a difference …. ONE BOOK AT A TIME.
Remember the end goal is to enhance the lives of others. And the simple gift of a book to a child who has never had one can help eradicate illiteracy and give these children a chance to succeed in life. Will you accept the challenge and join our movement? We all know that Altrusans R.O.C.K. and what better want to REALIZE OPPORTUNITY, CREATE KINDNESS than to create intentional acts of kindess by donating books. As Altrusans we can make a difference! We can change lives – sometimes the book you donate is the only one a child can call their own! Let’s help others develop a passion for reading that will last a lifetime!
