President's Message
Hello Altrusans,
What a busy season! I hope you're not as busy as I am. Hopefully we can rest after the holidays.
Let's start with our annual bazaar December 2nd. We raised over $5200!!! You worked very hard, and it's so appreciated. You ROC!
A special thanks to chairs, Kathy Dalby and June Kates guidance. It was great seeing our guest again. We did a great job inviting them.
On a sad note, Betty Redfern lost her son, Daniel James Wilson, Jr. on December 6th. His service will be Saturday, January 13th, at Kings Grant Presbyterian Church. The tentative time is 11:00am.
If you wish to send a card, her address is;

Greetings Altrusans,
I hope this message finds you doing well. Winter is here! It is wonderful to see lights go up and the making of new memories with family and friends! As celebrations and reunions begin, please take a moment to notice your neighbors. Maybe a neighbor who could use a helping hand with his/her yard, help with an errand, or just a simple wave “Hello”. The holiday season can be a wonderful time for some, but for others it can be a lonely time. As Altrusans, we always have empathy for those around us; being caring and giving are attributes that inspire the greatness of our “small but mighty” club!
Human Rights Day is celebrated on December 10th and supported by Altrusa International! This year “marks the 75th anniversary of one of the world's most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status”.This year's theme is Freedom, Equality and Justice for All. Our club works very hard in supporting freedom, equality and justice, not just our Tidewater community, but to communities all around the globe! Our members are always brainstorming new ways they can help, just another reason why Altrusa is a wonderful organization!
Please click here to learn more about Human Rights Day.
Wishing you and yours Happy Holidays!
All the Best,
Tracey

Interested in being a Sponsor
to a Teacher in Kenya?
Want to make a difference to a teacher in Kenya? Here’s your chance.
Global 1 School is in the Kibera section of Nairobi which is one of the poorest areas in Africa. The students who attend have very limited resources but work hard and value education. Some of our favorite students have come from this school. The teachers have limited funds to purchase classroom supplies and materials. We have an opportunity to sponsor a teacher in class Pre K - Grade 7 for $25. If you are interested in sponsoring a teacher, please bring your $25 to the January meeting to Deb Davis.
June and Jennifer and family members with Max, who’s in the band and a senior at Virginia Tech. It was their last home game. Unfortunately, Virginia Tech lost but the band sounded great!
With sincere condolences, we think of Betty during this time of sadness. Her son passed away on December 6th. As soon as more information becomes available, Sherral will let everyone know.

Altrusa International Literacy Challenge One Book at a Time, Part II
President Linda is continuing Immediate Past President Kathy book challenge and we want you to be a part of it. President Linda firmly believe that literacy is the number one focus for Altrusa and we want to continue to enhance that commitment. Our ultimate goal is to enhance the lives of others ONE BOOK AT A TIME! The challenge is for Altrusans to distribute one million books and/or devote 500,000 literacy service hours to our communities during the 2023-2025 biennium. So how can you participate?
Develop a signature literacy project (or expand on an existing one) that will continue to grow and develop into the future. Large and small clubs alike can participate in this challenge.
2. Assign a record keeper to keep track of the number of books you distribute AND/OR the number of service hours you spend (for example reading to children, the elderly, participating in a book exchange … something that works for you, your club and your community).
3. Carry the project over through the next club year.
4. Send your numbers (for both years) to the International Service Committee before
June 1, 2025. The easiest way to record this is to record each time you club donates books so you don’t forget any!
5. Sit back and relish in the fact that you are making a difference …. ONE BOOK AT A TIME.
Remember the end goal is to enhance the lives of others. And the simple gift of a book to a child who has never had one can help eradicate illiteracy and give these children a chance to succeed in life. Will you accept the challenge and join our movement? We all know that Altrusans R.O.C.K. and what better want to REALIZE OPPORTUNITY, CREATE KINDNESS than to create intentional acts of kindess by donating books. As Altrusans we can make a difference! We can change lives – sometimes the book you donate is the only one a child can call their own! Let’s help others develop a passion for reading that will last a lifetime!
