JOSEPH ALSUP OF STODDARD COUNTY MISSOURI
JOSEPH ALSUP OF STODDARD COUNTY MISSOURI
Apparently the first known record of this Alsup Family in Stoddard Co. Missouri was in 1837 when Joseph Alsup served on the County's second Grand Jury. The Alsup's had came into this county from Tennessee as many of the other early settlers had.
Joseph Alsup was born about 1795 in Anson Co. North Carolina, believed to have been a son of Joseph Alsop/Alsup and Drucilla Lawson. Joseph was married, probably in Henry Co, Tennessee, to Martha Taylor, daughter of Isaac Taylor and Nancy Baumgarner. Isaac Taylor died in Stoddard Co, Missouri by 1852, leaving his daughter Martha "Micka" thirty dollars in trade. Joseph and Martha had six known children: Allen, Machel/Kachel?, Cullen, Joseph Wesley, James and John Alsup. Joseph and Martha settled on a high ridge near what is now Idalia, which Joseph and his sons cleared and began farming. Martha had died before the 1860 census were taken and is believed to have been buried near their homestead. Joseph died 18 March 1868 in Castor Twp. Stoddard Co, Missouri.
This record is found in the Stoddard Co, Missouri Will Book C, page 66

Allen Alsup made final settlement of the estate of Joseph Alsup on 30 January 1873, showing a total of $158.83. The only heirs of Joseph Alsup still living on this date were two sons, Allen and John and a grandson Elijah, who were each suppose to receive $51.76 as their third of the estate after all accounts were settled.
Allen signed a receipt for $51.76 which was due Elijah as his guardian, since Elijah was still a minor. On 26 July 1875, the Stoddard County Probate Court issued a citation to Allen Alsup to appear before them to show cause why he had failed to settle the account of Elijah Alsup, as guardian. This action was originally initiated by Margaret Alsup Roby, mother of Elijah and widow of Elijah's father Joseph Wesley Alsup who was killed in the Civil War. She had married as her second husband Ben Roby, who then became legal guardian of Elijah by the Stoddard County, Missouri Court. On 30 January 1875, H. H. Bedford signed a receipt for the third due John Alsup, saying it had not been paid in John's lifetime.
The children of Joseph and Martha Alsup
The First child of Joseph Alsup and Martha Taylor was Allen Alsup. He was born about 1828 in Tennessee and died 28 August 1883 in Castor twp. Stoddard Co. Missouri and was buried in the Bluff Cemetery. He married a neighbor's daughter Julia Wilson and started a small mill and cotton gin at the base of the Bluff Hill near the spring. During the War between the States, Allen closed the business and joined his brothers James and Wesley in Company D, First Division, Missouri State Guard. We do not know the circumstances of what happened to the Alsup family during this dark time, but Julia Alsup died and left three young children alone. Allen then left the State Guard and came home. He did not return to the army, but kept close contact with his brothers and friends in the Confederate Army. Allen was eventually issued an exemption by the United Forces.
After the War was over Allen remarried on 4 January 1865 in Stoddard Co, Missouri a widow, Mrs. Margaret Drucilla C. McAuley Alsup, the widow of Thomas Alsup, a distant relative, who also had died in the Civil War. Drucilla Alsup was born ca 1839 in Benton Co, Tennessee and died in 1888 and was buried in the Bluff Cemetery.
