Gabriel Elkins, born probably in Pittsylvania Co, (later Henry Co.) VA. Between the year 1765-66. Apparently he died in Paris, Lamar Co, TX, 1846. (or in Anderson Co, TX.). He married about 1786, probably in Pittsylvania Co, VA. His 1st wife Stacy Dillard. Stacy Dillard (daughter of Col. Thomas Dillard, Jr. and Martha Webb), born about 1770-73, probably in Pittsylvania Co, VA. and died in Buncombe Co, NC about 1800-1810. At some point between 1810-12 Stacy died and Gabriel Elkins married Sophia Dillard. Sophia Dillard (daughter of Thomas Dillard lll, and Dorcus Love), born probably in Buncombe Co, NC about 1790-94, and apparently died in Paris, Lamar Co, TX. In the absence of further data, it is not know exactly which children were Stacy’s and which Sophie’s. Sophia a niece of Gabriel Elkins 1st wife Stacy.
Mr. Hoyte Elkins thinks Stacy died about 1812, and Gabriel married Mary Lucas Pendleton, (daughter of John Pendleton and Rachel Lucas), born 10 Dec 1796. Mary died Feb. 14, 1814, probably from complications of childbirth, then Gabriel married Sophia Dillard. He thinks Sophia was a daughter of John Dillard, another brother of Stacy, either way, Sophia would still be a niece of Stacy.

Eliza Ann Higgins apparently did not live very long with Higdon. She had an illegitimate son in 1875, Jackson “Jack”, called Elkins on 1880 census, but was called Higgins for the rest of his life. On 28 Feb 1881, in Cannon Co, TN, Eliza became the wife of John Taylor.

Child No. 19. Indamon Lafayette Elkins (son of Gabriel Elkins and Sophia Dillard), born about 1827, Cannon Co, TN. (This information came to me from Mr. Hoyte Elkins). Indamon is listed as Edmondson Elkins, from Cannon Co, TN. Killed in the Mexican War at Molina Del Ray, 18 Apr 1848, in Brown’s History of Woodbury and Cannon Co, TN. Records at Nashville reveal that Indamon L. Elkins was the soldier who died in the Mexican War, not Edmondson Elkins. There is a Court Record of the first settlement of the estate of Indamon L. Elkins, dated 5 Oct 1850, in Cannon Co, TN. His estate consisted of a land warrant which was sold for $100.00. Return of a legal fee $11.00, One Treasury Script worth $13.26, making a total of $124.26. Expenses and fees amounted to $50.00, leaving a total of $74.26 to divide among 16 legal heirs, amounting to $4.62 for each heir. It appears that Indamon was not married as no wife or children are listed in the first settlement. Two of his supposed brothers were administrators of his estate. A search has been made for an account of the second settlement of Indamon’s estate, from 1850 to 1860 Court Records at the Woodbury Courthouse. There were seven heirs listed in the first settlement, all counted as Gabriel’s children on my list, except for Mrs. I. U. Manus, which will require research for her given name. It is hope that the second settlement, if ever found, will make certain the list of Gabriel’s children. Edmund S. and Benjamin P. were the Administrators of his estate, and the following were also named; M. G. (Murphy Gabriel) Elkins, Mrs. D. F. (Daniel Franklin) Manus (Susanna Elkins), Mrs. John Estes (Charlotte Elkins); Nancy Bogle (Nancy Elkins Mears), and Mrs. I. U. Manus (May be J. U. Manus)
Reba’s note: I found an Indamon Manus, age 26 years old on 1870 Cannon Co, TN. Census, page 165. I wonder if this Indamon Manus could have been a son of Mrs. I/J? U. Manus, who inherited in the estate of Indamon Elkins. I also found this marriage Record: I. F. (Indamon) Manus married 30 Aug 1870, Livingston Co, KY to Sarah Wilson.

Maybe Stacy named a daughter Martha, the Sophia name one of her girls Martha. Mrs. Ethel Pope insists that her grandmother told her that her parents were Gabriel Elkins and Sophia Dillard and she wrote it down in her baby book. She also said Gabriel and Sophia moved to Texas with Martha and died there. It was reported that Martha moved to Paris, TX. in 1845, from TN. Along with her parents and some other family members from Tennessee. In 1846, both of her parents died, leaving Martha an orphan at age 16 years.

Reba’s Note: My interest in the Gabriel Elkins family started when I asked my Aunt Millie Liles about my ancestors. She told me I was a descendant of two sisters, Artie and Susanna Elkins. She also said they were daughters of Gabriel Elkins, but said she did not know the name of their Mother. My Aunt Millie also stated that my grandparents Benjamin Tillman Pryor Morgan and Minnie Bell Nancy Dow Parks were cousins. It turned out they were first cousins, once removed. Someone else told me about the Dillard Connection. I don’t now remember who, but think it was my great aunt Myrtle Rasdon. My research has been mainly on these two daughters. The rest of these children have been researched by other and I cannot verify any of it. No Last Wills, or Bible Records have been found to prove any of these children were children of Gabriel Elkins.
