The American Legion Post 105 Family (Legion, Auxiliary, Sons and Riders) encourages youth and service organizations to attend this open event. The courage and selflessness of the Chaplains embodies the Auxiliary's motto of "SERVICE, NOT SELF."
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Please join the American Legion Family and other veteran organizations in honoring the legend of the FOUR CHAPLAINS' selfless duty and bravery in the face of certain death with the sinking of the USAT Dorchester in 1943.
Once all life vests were distributed, the four chaplains removed their own vests and handed them to frightened young sailors. As the ship went down, survivors in nearby rafts could see the four chaplains--arms linked and braced against the slanting deck. Their voices could also be heard offering prayers.
