District 26 Spreads Cheer at VA Menlo Park

December 2019. Patients and family enjoyed live music entertainment for the annual holiday celebration. District 26 volunteers cut cake and set up light refreshments for patients. Soon after, holiday gifts purchased from a wish list were distributed to long-term patients. Short-timers received a gift bag of handmade scarf/hat/mittens, paper/pen, lap blanket, and candy.

Willard's delighted in his new mittens, scarf and hat. He was watching the Army/Navy football game in the vestibule when the Auxiliary presented him with his holiday gift.

Auxiliary Partners with Girl Scouts & Women's Club

December 2019. District 26 Auxiliary ladies collected veteran wish-list gifts for long-term patients at Menlo Park's VA Bldg 331. In addition, Federated Women's Club of San Carlos donated lap blankets for long-term patients. The Auxiliary also donated gift bags for short-term patients which included puzzles, fleece blanket, pad/pen, volunteer Graciela's handmade scarf/mitten/hat set, toiletry kits, and candy. On December 7, Foster City Daisy Troop 61829 and San Mateo Troop 61740 delivered their holiday cards to accompany all the gifts.

The Gift of Warmth

November 2019. Through the online community of NextDoor, a donor gave us a boatload of yarn which was given to our Auxiliary supporter, Graciela. She crocheted & donated 60 hats, 30 scarves, and 30 mittens for veterans this winter. Her gifts will be distributed to VA patients and CSM veteran students.

Honoring Our Longest Member

November 2019. Luella (in pink) celebrated her 97th birthday and 85th year as an Auxiliary member, serving as past president, treasurer, and multiple other roles. Stand Down Recognition

November 2019. Peninsula Special Interest Lions Club acknowledged Auxiliary volunteers U82 President Carol Rael & District 26 President Peggy Toye for their collaboration efforts at the Stand Down planning meetings. The PSILC's emphasis is on medical assistance for a wide variety of communities (domestic & international), including veterans.

Donations for CSM Vets

November 4, 2019. College of San Mateo's Veterans Resource Opportunity Center accepted our food and toiletry donations. Some vets are struggling so the free food helps. VROC provides counseling, referrals, lounge area, study carrels, computer use, access to gym shower, and more. Soaps, dental care supplies, shampoo, etc. from our fourth fall toiletry drive were also delivered.

San Mateo & Design Tech High Girls State Delegates Visit

October 2019. San Mateo's Mimi and d.tech's Alexis shared with ladies of the Auxiliary their Girls State experience. The overarching consensus of the week-long leadership & citizenry conference from the young ladies included camaraderie, strong social support, and resourcefulness. Mimi flew from Washington, DC, where she was attending a James Brady Institute conference, to attend Girls State in SoCal. Alexis shared she was campaign manager for two successful candidates and editor-in-chief of "GS Newsletter." Their experience ended with heartfelt tearful goodbyes. Auxiliary Stands Strong at Stand Down

Foster City, October 2019. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped at veterans & volunteer registration, bag check-in, food service, and pet canopy. Services provided to vets included medical, dental & eye exams, free clothing, food & toiletry, and social services (housing, counseling, emergency response org, and more). Here are some pictures of veterans enjoying their Friday lunch of chicken adobo donated by a SSF Lions Club. Our ladies met a lot of volunteers from other orgs such as San Mateo County Blue Star Moms (mothers of active service wo/men), Red Cross, several Lions Club chapters, translators, churches, and individuals.

U82 used the majority of donations from our Fourth Annual Toiletry Drive for the Oct 3-5 Stand Down veteran attendees. Residual toiletries will be given to short-term VA Menlo Park patients of Bldg 331 with our usual holiday gifts. CSM's Veterans Resource Opportunity Center will also receive toiletries for their students.

Generations Assist Our Veterans

September 2019. Ladies assembled 125 ditty bags for the Oct 3-5 Stand Down veteran attendees. FC Girl Scouts Daisies enclosed U82's note of appreciate for the veterans' service.

September 9, 2019. Dr. Eleanor Britter of the Peninsula Special Interest Lions Club, and organizer of the Stand Down, explains the layout for the Oct 3-5 Stand Down in Foster City's Boothbay Park. The Auxiliary is excited to organize the toiletries for our local veterans.

September 9, 2019. San Mateo County comes through with lots of toiletries for our veterans! Toiletries will be distributed at the Stand Down. Some will be set aside for short-term patients at the VA Medical facility Bldg. 331 in Menlo Park which Unit 82 adopted. Additional toiletries will be donated to CSM's Veterans Resource Opportunity Center. Extras will be donated to the Defenders Lodge in Palo Alto's VA medical facility. Veterans Stand Down in Two Weeks - Boothbay Park in Foster City

September 19, 2019. What's a Veterans Stand Down? This Stand Down is for our non-combat Veterans that for a weekend will receive medical, dental and vision services, as well as chaplain counseling, legal assistance, housing referrals, clothing and other supplies. The schedule of events includes a program to teach disaster preparedness. Full meals and snacks provided. Reveille and Taps will be shared with the neighborhood each day. As camaraderie is a big part of the experience, there will be musical entertainment and games for the veterans. Generals and Captains will be on site to maintain military discipline. The final day will include military dignitaries with a formal celebration of the lives lost from all wars that the United States has fought for freedom at home and abroad. 100th Anniversary of the Auxiliary & American Legion

September 3, 2019. Get ready for a celebration for the ages! San Mateo Post 82 and Redwood City Post 105 are combining forces to celebrate the establishment of both the Auxiliary and the American Legion! Toiletry Drive ends Monday, Sept 16

September 2019. Travel-size unused, new toiletries needed for patients at VA Menlo Park & VA Palo Alto facilities and for October Stand Down. All toiletries given to veterans: Palo Alto's Defenders Lodge, Menlo Park Bldg 331 long- and short-term patients, CSM's Veterans Resource Opportunity Center, and VA chapel. NEEDED: shampoo, soap, razor, toothbrush, toothpaste, antiseptic wipes, facial tissue packs, etc.

2019 STAND DOWN is Here!

August 2019. The Peninsula Special Interest Lions Club is hosting this year's Stand Down in Foster City, October 3-5. This community-based event benefiting Veterans provides social services, clothing, support, food, and toiletries to Vets. We need your help as volunteers and/or as donors of goods. Ladies from the Auxiliary will be volunteering. Come join us in this 'feel good' community activity. Veterans Served Our Country; let's serve our Veterans!

August 2019. A long-time Legionnaire from Post 105 (Redwood City), Bob was a delight to work with at the VA barbecues. RIP. Here is the link to pictures from his memorial at Post 105.

Peninsula Day Camp

July 2019. Unit 82 volunteers helped Girl Scouts PDC with food distribution at Huddart Park. Team distributed breakfast & dinner cooking ingredients for 1,100 campers, aides, and volunteers in record time of 1-1/2 hours.

Serving our Veterans & Celebrating Independence

July 4, 2019. A bright, sunny day ushered in the VA-Menlo Park's annual outdoor affair. Our ladies came out in force to serve up hotdogs cooked by Post 82 Legionnaires. We served hundreds of hotdogs, watermelon, chips, etc. and thanked the patients for their service to our country. We were touched when they, in turn, thanked us for volunteering.

Knitting Our Communities

June 2019. Through the online forum Next Door, a generous Belmont neighbor donated lots of yarn for our Fremont volunteer Graciela to continue making scarves, neckwarmers and hats for veteran patients at the Menlo Park VA.

"Are You From Girls State?!"

May 2019 at Post 585. Unit 585 and District 26 were happy to host this year's Girls State Delegates at Girls State Tea, an informative brunch for Delegates & their families. California Girls State, a week-long rising senior leadership & citizenship program, hosts 540 girls at Claremont McKenna College in late-June. This transformative, prestigious program empowers young leaders to pursue goals, network with new friends, and model positive, supportive behavior all while learning about government workings and community service. DISTRICT 26's 2019 DELEGATES. High schools represented: Aragon, Belmont, Burlingame, Capuchino, Carlmont, Credo, Design Tech, Half Moon Bay, Hillsdale, Mills, Oceana, Petaluma, Rancho Cotate, San Mateo, Scotts Valley, Sequoia, Technology, and Terra Nova.

Delegates had the opportunity to ask speakers questions about Girls State.

(Left) Past California State American Legion Auxiliary President and uber-volunteer Linda Workman spoke about what girls can expect on location--housing, scheduling, transportation logistics, and meals. Girls will be so busy; they won't have time to look at their cell phones!

(Below left) 2018 Delegate Lila spoke about her experience from last year and emphasized girls will gain from their experience what energy they put in when onsite. Cooperating, collaborating, and mutual respect are hallmarks of the experience.

Five Bay Area Districts Welcomes CA President Cannon

April 2019. Ladies representing Districts from San Mateo, San Francisco, Contra Costa, Alameda, and Santa Clara counties gathered to greet CA President Joan Cannon. Unit 82's secretary & D26 president Peggy Toye reported on D26's accomplishments from last year. D26 rocked!

Vietnam Veterans of America: Annual Car Show in Redwood City

March 2019. We're sharing pictures from the 2019 Car Show honoring our veterans and held at the Veterans Memorial Building. Thanks go to William Jackson, Judge Advocate & Historian of RWC American Legion Post 105, for sharing his pictures.

We Deliver: CSM's Veterans Resource Opportunity Center

March 2019. As part of our annual giving, Unit 82 delivered food supplies to veteran students who utilize College of San Mateo's VROC. VROC physical services include study hall space, kitchenette, computer & printer access, a TV lounge area, and camaraderie for veterans. For details on their other services, check VROC's webpage. We also drop off study supplies such as paper, pens, notebooks, etc. VROC is located on the first floor of Bldg. 16. Unit 82 will make our second 2019 delivery in the fall.

Having Heart: St. Valentine's Day Gift Bags

February 2019. Unit 82 created 14 gift bags (12 for adult patients and two for offsprings) and delivered them to the VA's Palo Alto Polytrauma Unit. Via online network, Next Door, several community neighbors donated reusable grocery bags for us to contain our gift of writing utensils, squeeze toy, coloring books, etc. Many thanks, neighbors!

December 2018/January 2019. While water damage repair for the new Building 500 Polytrauma Unit continues, the Auxiliary completed another year of decorating the original Polytrauma wing with holiday cheer. Thanks go to Sally for buying & donating a new artificial Christmas tree last year.
