2022 Holiday Season of Giving & Cheer

Units 472 & 585 Celebrate with Ugly Sweater Night

December 2022. Unit 472 was the nation's first virtual Unit. Being miles & states apart didn't stop them from having fun with an Ugly Sweater party. Thanks, Kerry (U472 President), for sharing the picture!

VA Annual "Toys for Vets" Program -- It's a Wrap

December 2022. Due to a mishap with the usual toy donor, expected donations were not to be had for Toys for Vets (T4V). Through generous donations from our six Units, Post 105, CA Girls State Dept. Committee officers, and personal friends, we were able to purchase $1800+ worth of toys to the Veterans Affairs-Menlo Park T4V program. In addition, the 'Foster City Buy Nothing' community, Marine Corps League, and Marine's Toys for Tots also donated gifts. In-house patients submitted their list of 70 children they'd needed gifts for. Volunteers from Unit 105 and Bank of America selected gifts, wrapped & labeled patient family bundles, and delivered the bundles to multiple buildings on campus.

The District was informed of the dearth of toys on Wednesday, December 14; that night solicitations were made to the Auxiliary,  Posts (via the ALA), and local communities. By Sunday morning, we were buying toys with pledged funds and receiving drop-off toys. This three-day collection for T4V embodies our District's synergy of working together to fulfill our mission of helping veterans and military families. As often stated at Girls State, "we make it work."

A Grievous Loss

November 2022. CA Girls State (CAGS) unexpectedly lost a stalwart team member. As the CAGS Director, Tammy managed with aplomb, grace and verve the diverse cadre of volunteers. We are heartbroken about her passing but hope to live up to her standard of care and devotion to CAGS.

Coloring Helps Veteran Patients

October 2022. Although many of us have forgone face masks due to COVID-19 and are more free to travel about, patients at the VA-Menlo Park medical center remain at high risk of illness. The isolation and dearth of visitors can make days long. Unit 105 Redwood City recently donated coloring books and pencils for patients to partake in a calming and soothing pastime.

In addition, she also faithfully volunteered as a member of San Mateo County Blue Star Moms. Sadly, Judy was preceded in death by her husband on July 1. Condolence cards can be sent to The Family of Judy Bond, c/o ALA Unit 238, 555 Buel Avenue, Pacifica, CA 94044.

2022 Girls State - 79th Session

June 2022. For the first time in two years, CA Girls State (CAGS) was held in-person and 408 students were ready to LEEP--Learn, Engage, Empower and 'Pass It On.' Only one rising Senior from each high school is selected to represent her school. Students were blended within their dorm from around the state: rooming with gals from cities, suburbs, SoCal, central valley, northern counties, coastal areas, farming counties, etc.

The program strongly emphasizes the Auxiliary's focus on our military families and Americanism. CAGS highlights: raising & lowering of the flag, Poppy Drive program, Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation connection, and youth education. Auxiliary members served as Liaisons to spread our message. CAGS educates students on the machinations of elections & governance. Many of these students have never 'lost' an election so being at CAGS for this disappointment was a positive environment of support and encouragement. The staff focuses on camaraderie, supportive attitude, inclusion/acceptance of differences, gracious behavior, and empathy. If you have a rising senior next spring, ask her high school if they're enrolled in CAGS program or contact D26 for more info. Feedback from some of D26's Citizens:

"I would like to extend my greatest thanks to you all for granting me this amazing opportunity...I learned so much about the processes and structures of our state government as well as how supporting our veterans and their families is vital to our community. I served on the Federalist Party Platform Committee as well as in Marshall County and the Mock Trial. In each of these positions I worked with a diverse array of people to create something new and powerful. Amongst all this I was also able to meet some of the strongest and most inspiring people, including both the delegates around me and the guest speakers and Girls State alumni...For all this and more, I am forever grateful for your support." Unit 585 San Carlos Delegate

"The experience I had was filled with so much learning and fun. It was unlike anything I have ever experienced, and I am so grateful I went. I know it takes a lot to sponsor us delegates, so I am very thankful all the members of the ALA take the time to do so." Unit 105 Redwood City Delegate

"...gratitude for your generous sponsorship which enabled me to participate...This week of joy, learning and new experiences has opened my eyes to new nuanced perspectives, a deeper understanding of service, and how to advocate for positive change. Unit 105 Redwood City Delegate

"Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to participate in CAGS! I am truly honored and am really enjoying the experience." Unit 474 Coastside Delegate

D26 Hosts Department President Dee Ann Graham

April 2022. After three long years, the SF Bay Area ably hosted visiting Department President Dee Ann Graham. Bay Area Districts represented: D8 San Francisco, D9 Contra Costa, D10 Alameda, D13 Santa Clara, and D26 San Mateo. Organized by District 26, over 60 members and Legionnaires attended. Districts and Units reports touched on topics such as food insecurity, shipments of care boxes to active duty troops and care packages to at-risk veterans, SF's Center of Development & Civic Development, recital of "We Shall Keep the Faith" response to the poem "In Flanders Field," strong Girls State program in Contra Costa County, and more. Department President Dee Ann Graham gave her assessment of the year's progress and challenges. Our Bay Area programs strive to bolster the Auxiliary's mission to support our military families (troops and veterans), educate our youth about civic duty, and contribute to our local communities. Pack 15,000 Bags of Rice in Two Hrs?

March 2022. Yes we can. American Legion Post 105’s Family showed up in force to assist the Bay Area Global Outreach Lions Club (BAGOLC). The challenge was to measure/weigh spices/rice, bag & seal, label bags, and pack boxes. The food will be distributed to needy families.

It was a ‘rice’ to the finish but we got it done in two hours–Legionnaires, Auxiliary, Riders, BAGOLC, Rise Against Hunger, San Mateo Lions, Xi Pi Delta sorority*, et al. The Post Family manned the final leg of the assembly line–labeling the bags before packing them into boxes. At first, we were surprised when the 20-something instructor thought our Family needed “younger” assistance

due to the speed needed and lifting of boxes. We took that with a ‘grain’ of salt; our Family kept up just fine. ‘Gong’ were any doubts about our ability. The rice was donated by BAGOLC and Skylawn Memorial Park. A fun time was had by all. Rice-a-packing--a San Mateo Treat!

*Xi Pi Delta learned about the Auxiliary through a "San Mateo Daily Journal" article and contacted us to offer their helping hands.

TONGA RELIEF DONATION

Post 105 Family never rests. On January 15, a devastating undersea volcanic eruption occurred near Tonga. A U.N. official says 80% of Tonga's 105,000 people were affected by the undersea volcanic eruption and ensuing tsunami that lashed the Pacific island nation.

Commander Smith set into motion to collect monetary relief donations from their ‘extended’ Post Family organizations. On March 7, Commander Smith presented an $800 check to Tonga Consul General Sela Tukia. Unit 472 & Girls State

February 2022. Our own U472's members were featured in this month's CA Auxiliary News Hub. We're proud of the excellent program these ladies pull together every year--especially during the stressful first year of COVID in 2020 when the team quickly pivoted to a virtual experience so hundreds of student delegates wouldn't lose out on a Girls State experience. The hope is for this year's program to be held in the Sacramento Area. Location to be announced as soon as we know.
