Thanks also goes to American Legion Post 105 for allowing us to stage and store the collection onsite.

Since 2016, Graciela has donated well over 400 of her crocheted handiwork--hats, mittens, gaters, and scarves. This month she delivered over 100 gifts for long- and short-term patients at the VA Menlo Park and the Veterans Resource Center in Belmont. Approximately 100 Encouragement Cards from Unit 472 have already been delivered to VA Menlo Park patients. Auxiliary Loses A Long-Time Stalwart Volunteer

September 28, 2020. Sadly we report the passing of our dear Luella Dilling, 97, District 26's longest-standing member since 1934 (86 years). She's held multiple positions for her Unit throughout the years--president, vice president, and committee chairmanships for Education, Children/Youth & Past President Parley. Her last position was as Unit 82 treasurer in 2014. Prior to this, she served as San Francisco District 8 President as well. In May, Auxiliary members and Legionnaires cheered her up with a drive-by celebration. Luella exuded dignity, grace and dedication to cause. She gave so much of herself to our military families. All of us who knew her are thankful Luella touched our lives. Luella is survived by her daughter and two sons. Rest in peace, dear lady.

Tragic Loss for Auxiliary Family - Jessica Wright

September 8, 2020. With great sadness, we share the news of losing a member of Unit 472 in a small plane crash (NY Times article). Jessica joined the California Girls State counseling staff in 2004 after having served as a junior counselor in TN. She's described by U472's president Valerie Hardy as "a hard worker, and great hugger and laugher. Jessica served our country in the Air National Guard as an officer. Her hope was to retire in a few years.

"Jessica leaves behind her husband, Brandon, and their two young sons, and well as a myriad of friends and family. Jessica was a bright light and beautiful soul."

Those interested in contributing to a fund to assist Jessica's family can do so at this link. (Photographs courtesy of V. Hardy and NY Times, respectively.)

Supporting Veterans with Masks

July 2020. Redwood City Unit 105 accepted the donation of non-medical face masks by two young ladies wanting to help veterans and their supporters. Face masks have been distributed to Legionnaires, VA staff, veterans in need, and those who support veterans. Sisters Lindsey and Ana didn't let COVID-19 stop them from wanting to help and created Masks For Causes. The sisters met U105 secretary Peggy through Girl Scouts Peninsula Day Camp. Ana's Girl Scouts Troop created 2019 holiday cards which were distributed with D26's holiday gifts for patients at VA-Menlo Park Bldg 331.

Unit 105 assists San Mateo County Blue Star Moms

July 2020. San Mateo County Blue Star Moms (SMCBSM) is a non-profit community of moms or stepmoms whose child currently serves or who was honorably discharged from military service. Our newest Unit (Redwood City) dove in to assist SMBSM to assemble care packages for homeless veterans. Packages include toiletries, two boxes of Girl Scouts cookies, dental kits, beef jerky, candy, hand sanitizers, antiseptic wipes, socks, and face towels. Bags will be delivered to San Mateo County Veterans Service Office in Belmont and the VA Resource Center at the Menlo Park VA.

Blue Star Moms & volunteers from Pacifica and San Mateo are keeping a safe distance while assembling gift bags. A limit of 11 masked volunteers was set to minimize exposure and maintain distancing.

Commemorative stars from retired flags are included as a keepsake with a message of appreciation to the veteran for serving our country.

Gift bags are ready for San Mateo County homeless vets.

Celebrating Luella!

May 17, 2020. While we all do our part by sheltering-in-place to slow the spread of COVID-19, we mustn't forget some of our most vulnerable population. Luella, 97, is District 26's longest standing Auxiliary member, since 1934! Today, approximately 25 Auxiliary members, Legionnaires, and Riders made a drive-by celebration to Luella's home to let know she was in our thoughts. Luella, her family, and neighbors enjoyed the caravan, honking horns, waving flags, and ourpouring of affection for Lu.
