N.B. 1 and 2 Samuel were originally one book, simply divided between two scrolls. You should think of these two books as really one.
Moreover, it is part of an epic history that includes Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Kings, and spans the period from the entry into the Promised Land to the exile in Babylon.

As noted above, 1 Samuel is part of a large history spanning the period from the entry into the Promised land under Joshua, through to the exile in Babylon. It would seem that 1 Samuel was written by later author(s), drawing on a number of sources, and writing during the exile. It reflects the theology of Deuteronomy.
