Jacob is also known as Israel.
Jacob's parents were Isaac and Rebekah. His older twin brother was Esau.
Jacob tricked Esau out of his birthright and out of Isaac's blessing thus angering Esau. Jacob fled to Paddan Aram, where he served Laban. On his way, at Bethel, he had a dream of a ladder, or stairway, reaching up to heaven with angels ascending and descending.
He fell in love with Laban's daughter, Rachel, and, at Laban's insistence, worked seven years for her. However, when it came to the wedding, Laban sent Leah, Rachel's sister, and Jacob unwittingly married her. He then worked another seven years in order to marry Rachel.
Jacob and Leah had the following children:
Reuben,
Simeon,
Levi,
Judah
Being unable to conceive, Rachel gave Jacob her servant, Bilhah. Jacob and Bilhah's children were:
Dan,
Naphtali.
Having stopped conceiving, Leah gave Jacob her servant, Zilpah. Jacob and Zilpah's children were:
Gad
Asher.
Leah had two more sons with Jacob:
Issachar
Zebulun.
They then had a daughter, Dinah.
God then enabled Rachel to conceive. Together they had:
Joseph
Benjamin.
Eventually, Jacob decided to return to Canaan and to his brother Esau. He feared Esau's anger but Esau welcomed him warmly.
Joseph was sold by his brothers and taken as a slave into Egypt where he became "Prime Minister" (under Pharaoh) so as to manage the seven years of famine that he had foretold. As a result of the famine also affecting Canaan, Joseph's brothers came to him seeking food. Eventually, Jacob and his entire family were brought to Egypt where they were cared for by Joseph.
Jacob died in Egypt but gave instructions that he was to be buried in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre in Canaan, where Abraham and Sarah, and Isaac and Rebekah had also been buried and where Jacob had buried Leah.
