IMR 4227 Smokeless Powder

John Kort posted some information a while back on the Marlin forum about using H4227 with great results. He also noted using some heavy loads in his stronger Marlin rifle. H4227 is similar to IMR4227 but sometimes pressures very from one to the other. I acquired some IMR4227 quite a few years ago and have just now really starting shooting some loads with it. I have just recently used this powder with the Lyman 427098, Hornady 200gr XTP, Speer GDHP, 43-210B and LazerCast's 200gr Magma type. John stated that the powder is position sensitive but I failed to move the powder to the back before each shot.

"IMR-4227"

This is my "go-to" powder for replicating 1,600fps "High Velocity" 20,000psi High Pressure cartridges, shooting out to 265 Yards with a scoped Marlin 1894CB "Group II Load" rifle. Hitting Golf Balls (video) at this distance has been accomplished using 26gr with Acme's .430 200gr LFNRP bullets. These are hefty loads and can put a beating on the rifle. I do not plan on shooting these much and are not pleasant to shoot.

However, reducing the load down to just 20gr of IMR-4227 can be position sensitive but with 200gr LRNFP bullets, can give 1,349fps @ 12,238psi. Groups are marginal @ 100 yards but can be used. 12 of 20 shots gave an open group of 4".

Targets #208 - #211

Using an ACME bullet company's 200gr (.430) Magma type LRNFP, I used the following loads in both the Marlin 1894CB rifle and the Uberti "Buckhorn" 44 magnum framed revolver. I also used my Caldwell rest rather then the Lee Pistol Machine Rest and the big black other rifle rest. Accuracy may not be as good but that is due to the shooter, not the weapons.

#208, 100 yards

#209, 25 yards

#210, 25 yards

#211, 25 yards

Strain gauge tests of 17gr with a 210gr Lyman 427098 produced 1,127fps @ 9,389psi safe for Group I weapons, Lyman's 49th manual shows 17gr as a (max load with a 427098 and 18.5gr with a Speer 200gr JHP (without SPB buffer)

For Group II weapons, Lyman shows 20.5gr

max for the Speer JHP(19,600 CUP)

I also used 26gr with a 200gr Magma type from Acme. This is a very stout load and great care should be used when using this load.

In no way should this load be used in the Winchester 73' or normal frame revolvers.
