Day 30

One Word for the new year (in 3D)

We've had quite a year so let's look forward to next year and think of a word we would like to embrace for the future. We will make a 3 dimensional version of our word to keep us inspired and share it out of social media to help keep us accountable and focused on our goals for next year! Above is an example of my word for the year "create" which was made in the 3D design app Morphi but you can also use any 3D printing software or even go old school and design the word with cardboard and glue. For this challenge it's all about the ideas so feel free to create a 3D version of your word with any tools you want!

This idea is based on the book One Word that Will Change Your Life by author Jon Gordon, Jimmy Page, and Dan Britton. Take a look at Jon's short inspiring video below to get you thinking about what the right word is for you.

Once you've chosen the word that will help give your new year focus think about what materials you want to make it with. It's your word and your focus that needs to be sustained so what makes the most sense to you? If you want to try to create it digitally you can use a tool like Morphi to design it from scratch or draw it on paper and use the app to make it 3D. Below is an example of how I used it to create the title text for the cover of my book STEAM Power as an example. If you notice, I made sure to have all the letters touch so it could be 3D printed easily without falling apart!

If you want to use traditional maker tools you can build your word with paper, cardboard, foam core or even upcycle it by using things you have around the house. There are a number of options but here's a short tutorial on building letters with foam core and hot glue.

Finally, the last step is to share it out and celebrate! If you share it on social media be sure to use the hashtag #oneword and tag me @timneedles so I can spread the amazing work you made- I want to wish you all a happy and healthy new year!
