What do you think about when you see a shadow? Have you ever discovered the creativity that a shadow can offer to your projects?! I made this experience during quarantine time thanks to The Tinkering Studio and then I tried this activity with kids when I returned to school in September. It was a success!
If you have the possibility to play in a garden it will be really engaging for kids discovering new shapes using natural elements on their papers. You can play inventing a story starting from the shadows you create.
It will be an engaging activity for kids!
Playing with shadows indoor was the proposal that the Tinkering Studio made during the quarantine period to make tinkering at home. Often we don't think to the high level of materials that we can discover in our houses. You need to take a box, something as a shoes box will be great, cut one side that you will cover with a paper of light paper. Then will start your play, because using a light you could explore materials creating new shapes inside your box.
Attention! You need to remember that you will use this box to explore the reality, it isn't a Chinese shadows theatre.
For example mixing object you can create new shapes, if you use some pieces of colored plastic you can play with colors. You can play with the concept of big and small, what will happen if you go near the box with the lamp? The shape will bigger or smaller?
So I think that this is a good activity for kids to explore the reality and create new stories.
This is another interesting activity to do with kids!
As you can see you need photos of some shadows and then using the tool "modify photos" of your device you draw over the picture.
I wondered this activity because it has nice development for school activities! If you can use devices you can divide kids in two groups, they will be around the class or the school garden catching shadows and then the others will draw on the shadows photos of each other.
If it isn't possible having devices you can print shadows, insert them in plastic folders and drawing over using markers (you need to test which one function well before)!
Another activity about shadows can be an art project over the shadow picture printed. Also this one can be a fantastic project to share creativity.
