PEI LITERACY ALLIANCE
At every Canada Games, the host society partners with all 13 provincial and territorial teams to give back to the host community. The PEI Literacy Alliance is the Official Charity of the PEI 2023 Canada Winter Games.
A social legacy of the PEI 2023 Games, Canada Games for Literacy encourages all athletes, coaches, volunteers, spectators, and participants to donate new or gently used children’s books for ages 0-10. The donation program will help Island children build home libraries, increasing their literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional skills.
While the program will accept all types of children’s books, it is strongly recommended to donate books in both French and English that encompass the themes of resiliency, perseverance, and strength - representing the hard-fought journey of young Canada Games athletes.
The PEI Literacy Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing literacy across PEI by ensuring literacy barriers are minimized and gaps in services are filled so that all people in PEI reach their highest achievable literacy level. Key elements of their research include:
As little as 20 books in the home has a positive impact on literacy and learning, and the more you add, the greater the impact.
Reading to infants, toddlers and preschoolers is key to laying the foundation for learning.
Reading helps youth develop the literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional skills they need to address their learning challenges.
Literacy and social-emotional skills contribute to students becoming more resilient, confident, and perseverant which helps them in the classroom and beyond.
*We encourage you to bring one or two lightly used or new children's books in your checked luggage.
