Scheduling is completed in the spring of the preceding school year. Counselors will review credit requirements with each student and discuss recommended courses for the next school year. Using a student course request worksheet, you will request courses for the next school year. Students do not request their teachers, class times, or lunch period, only their courses. On the basis of the course requests, the master schedule is developed. Students are expected to take the classes originally requested. Students will provide alternate course selections in the event that the original courses selected are unavailable. Students are not guaranteed their elective course selections as the schedule is based on class size and course availability. Students will be mailed a final schedule during the summer.
The decision to enroll in one or more honors courses is made by students and their parents. The courses are called “honors” because students are willing to accept the challenge of using their minds well and working hard. These courses challenge students, even if they have successfully earned high grades without struggling in the past. Courses require hard work, dedication, and self-discipline. Students will be expected to make a substantial commitment of study and homework time for each course. Students looking for a challenge and possessing a strong desire to achieve academic excellence should consider the following list of characteristics:
Always have made A’s or B’s in the selected area(s) of coursework in middle school.
Have standardized test achievement score(s) in the 80th percentile or higher in the selected area(s) of coursework.
Have 95% or higher average daily attendance.
Able to organize, plan, and complete assignments and projects with little direction or additional support.
Consistently demonstrate higher order thinking skills by applying knowledge, applying skills, analyzing, and evaluating.
Demonstrate self-discipline and the ability to cooperate with classmates and teachers.
Have a strong interest in and curiosity about the subject matter.
Plan ahead. Students should complete as many basic requirements as possible during their freshman and sophomore years so they can have a greater opportunity to concentrate on a more individualized program their junior and senior years.
• Enroll with care because once school has started, no schedule changes will be made without special permission. Consider this enrollment final.
• Plan to take courses that are related to your own Career Cluster or Career Path, interests, and requirements.
• Do not enroll in a course if you have not met the prerequisite.
• Choose alternate courses in case courses are full or not offered due to lack of enrollment.
• Return the Course Request worksheet and Individual Career and Academic Plan when due.
• No student will be released any part of the school day unless enrolled in Marketing Internship, S.A.E., or school-to-work.
• Each student will enroll in eight classes each semester, unless enrolled in Marketing Internship, S.A.E., or attending Eldon Career Center.
• Students who fail core courses may have two options available to them to make up the failed credit:
1. Students can repeat the course.
2. If summer school is offered, students can take the course in summer school for credit recovery
