FA Introduction to Art/Art Studio H6001 (1 credit) Grade 9, 10, 11, 12 ** Limited to 25 students
This course is for students needing a fine art credit and for those interested in beginning the study of art. This beginning course explores the elements and principles of art by personal creation of two-dimensional art and by learning an appreciation of art. Basic skills in drawing, using pencil, markers, charcoal, pastels, and color pencil, will be developed. Students will continue to develop their skills by creating two-dimensional artwork. Medium will be expanded to include watercolor, tempra, and acrylic paint. Three-dimensional art will also be explored. This class is a prerequisite for all other art classes offered.
FA Printmaking H6003 (.5 credit) Grade 10, 11, 12 Secondary Art Course **Limited to 20 students
Prerequisite- must have taken Introduction to Art/Art Studio all year earning a B to take any secondary art class.
The student will be exposed to the history of printmaking and produce a variety of their own printmaking projects in styles such as but not limited to eraser carving, embossing, and linoleum. Class fee is $10.00
FA Sculpture I H6006 (.5 credit) Grade 10, 11, 12 Secondary Art Course ** Limited to 20 students
Prerequisite- must have taken Introduction to Art/Art Studio all year earning a B to take any secondary art class.
The student will be exposed to various types of sculpture. Clay is the main media for this class - but other materials will be used. The student will learn the history of clay, clay terms, and procedures. We will focus on the hand built methods of clay; pinch, coil, and slab and make projects using these methods. Class fee is $20.00
FA Sculpture II H6007 (.5 credit) Grade 10, 11, 12 Secondary Art Course **Limited to 20 students
Prerequisite- must have taken Introduction to Art/Art Studio all year earning a B to take any secondary art class, and Sculpture 1
The student will be exposed to various types of sculpture. Many other materials will be used to construct 3D works-- foam core, paper, plaster, wire mesh, and paper mache are some of the potential mediums, in addition to clay. The student will continue the history of clay, clay terms and procedures, as well as various modern and ancient sculptors. Class fee is $20.00
FA Advanced Sculpture H6014 (.5 credit) Grades 11,12 Advanced Art Course **Limited to 15 students
This advanced course is for those students who excelled in Sculpture I & II and want to continue the clay experience. Wheel thrown pottery will be continued as well as hand built projects. Students will be expected to develop a style of their own and work to improve their own and work to improve that style.
FA Painting H6009 (.5 credit) Grade 10, 11, 12 Secondary Art Course **Limited to 20 students
Prerequisite- must have taken Introduction to Art/Art Studio all year earning a B to take any secondary art class.
This course expands on basic skills learned in Art Studio. Principles and techniques of painting are explored and used in various mediums, including watercolor and acrylic paints. Individual experimentation and exploration will help develop the student’s own personal style and techniques. Class fee is $10.00
FA Advanced Studio H6012 (.5 credit) Grade 11, 12 Advanced Art Course **Limited to 20 students
This advanced course will expand the students past accomplishments and experiences in visual art. Their area of interest will be explored along with working on a variety of Medias and techniques. Students should have completed fundamental courses. Class fee is $10.00
FA Creative Art Methods H6017 (.5 credit) Grade 10, 11, 12 **Limited to 15 students
Prerequisite- Introduction to Art
Students will explore methods, materials and tools that are not commonly used to create unique artworks. We will create some of our own tools as well as use everyday materials to create artwork. This class is for students interested in making artwork using interesting items. We will build on the knowledge of the elements of art and principles of design discussed in Introduction to Art. There is a $10.00 materials fee.
FA Drawing I H6015 (.5 credit) Grade 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite- Intro to Art
This class will teach you how to draw, or strengthen already existing skills. We will start from the very beginning by learning foundational skills such as drawing from life, figure drawing, and drawing from a grid, among other techniques. Our drawing media will include pencil, graphite, charcoal, color pencil, and chalk pastels. Don't worry if you think you're not good enough at drawing-- this class will teach you how and you'll definitely see an improvement in your drawing ability
FA Drawing II H*** (.5 credit) Grade 10,11,12 Prerequisite- Intro to Art and Drawing I
This class will build upon skills developed in Drawing I. Our drawing media will expand to include color in a variety of different approaches. Students will be expected to come up with their own subject matter and/or compositions in some instances, reflecting an appropriate level of style and craftsmanship in their artwork. Color pencil, alcohol markers, soft pastel, and oil pastel are some of the mediums we will work with. A sketchbook is required-- if you cannot bring one, an economy sketchbook will be provided for you.
FA Community/Public Arts H6016 (1 credit) Grade 10, 11, 12 **Limited to 10 students
This class requires at least a C or better in previous art classes, as well as written permission from Mrs. Avey. In Community Arts, we will help complete a variety of projects on an as-needed basis. These could include murals, sidewalk paintings, on-campus painting or artistic improvements, etc. We will also create sculptures, installations, and other forms of artwork for the purpose of public exhibition. Much of the work will be collaborative in nature.
FA Performing Arts H1081F (1 credit) Grade 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite - Teacher Approval. Participation in the play and contests is required for this course.
Performing Arts is a speech and theater course designed for those students interested in the world of performing arts. The course content is designed to expand and practice speaking skills as well as emphasize and explore the world of Theater Arts. Emphasis is placed on individual improvement and on performance of public speaking and oral interpretation/dramatic skills. Participation in the High School Play, Performing Arts Night and Speech Contest is required.
BAND AND CHOIR
Any high school student using an instrument owned by the Morgan County R-II School District will be responsible for paying $20.00 rental fee (per semester of use). This fee will be used to pay for an annual year-ending professional cleaning and maintenance check-up of the instrument.
FA Band H6201 (1 credit) Grade 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite- Have to have participated in 7th and 8th grade band or teacher approval
Band is a non-auditioned marching and concert group. The marching band performs at home football games, invitational parades, and other marching activities. The marching band is also a pep band for school assemblies. As a concert group, the band performs one winter and two spring concerts in addition to the MSHSAA district music festival in the spring. Small ensemble or solo participation is required during the spring semester. Graded activities include summer band camp, after/before school rehearsals during marching and concert band seasons, all marching performances, all concerts, and MSHSAA District Music Festival. Students who participate in other extracurricular programs ( such as sports, academic bowl, etc.) are not prohibited from participating in band.
FA Fundamentals of Music: Learning an Instrument H6401 (.5 credit) Grade 9, 10, 11, 12
This course is designed for students who need a fine arts credit and are wanting to learn to play a traditional band instrument. Students will decide with help of the teacher what instrument they will learn. Students can choose from one of the following: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone or tuba. Classes will be spent learning music fundamentals, instrument fundamentals, playing skills and playing your assigned instrument. Students will be responsible for purchasing an Essential Elements Book 1 for their specific instrument ($13.00).
FA Percussion H6205S (.5 credit) Grade 9, 10, 11, 12
This class is designed for students who need a fine arts credit. Students do not need a music background to participate and do not have to be enrolled in Band. This class will focus on methods, techniques, and pedagogy associated with percussion performance, including timpani, snare drum,mallet instruments, multiple percussion, drum set, and non traditional percussion. This class begins with learning music basics as needed and progressing musically through active playing. Students are expected to participate in class every day as well as practice at home. Class assignments will include playing assessments, written assignments, as well as in class discussions.
FA Guitar Methods H6454 (1 credit) Grade 9, 10, 11, 12 **Limited to 20 students
This course is designed for students who need a fine arts credit and are interested in learning to play the guitar. Students do not need a musical background to participate and do not have to be enrolled in band. This class will focus on playing methods, techniques, and pedagogy associated with the guitar. This class begins with learning music basics as needed and progressing musically through active playing. Class assignments will include playing assessments, written assignments, as well as in class discussions. Students are required to purchase a method book at a cost to them of $13.
FA Instrumental Chamber Music H6206 (1 credit) Grade 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite- must be enrolled in band or with director’s permission.
Students in Instrumental Chamber Music will learn skills necessary to perform in solos and small ensembles. Additionally, this class will focus on auditioning skills. This is a great course for any instrumental music student that wants to improve on their instrument, perform solos and ensembles, audition for conference/district/all-state band, or audition for admission into college music programs or music scholarships. Students that would like to major in music in college would benefit greatly from this course.
FA Concert Choir H6411 (1 credit) Grade 9, 10, 11, 12 ** Limited to 90 students
Correct vocal production, diction, sight-reading, and musical notation will be studied. This large ensemble is designed to provide experienced singers the opportunity to prepare and perform traditional and contemporary chorus music. Members are required to attend rehearsals and performances outside of the regular school day. Performances include fall and Christmas shows, music contests, and festivals, Spring Fling and other performances as opportunities arise. The student will have opportunities to perform in solos and small ensembles. Students must pay a $25.00 Choir fee for robe cleaning, uniform shirt, and folder.
FA Chamber Choir H6412 (1 credit) Grade 9, 10, 11, 12 ** Limited to 32 students
Prerequisite- Approval of director through audition.
This course is designed for the high school student who has met the requirement of an audition. This group will be studying advanced music and vocal techniques. Members will be expected to attend rehearsals and performances outside the regular school day. Performances include fall and Christmas shows, music contests and festivals. Spring Fling and other performances as opportunities arise. Students have the opportunities to perform: the national anthem at sporting events, honor choirs, All-District Choir, Conference choir as well as solo and small ensembles for music festivals. Students must pay a $35.00 Choir fee for robe cleaning, choir shirt, Chamber Choir polo, and folder.
FA Vocal Chamber Choir H6409 (1 credit) Grade 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite- Approval from director. Student must be a member of Choir
Students in Vocal Chamber Music will learn skills necessary to perform in solos and small ensembles. Additionally, this class will focus on auditioning skills. This is a great course for any choir student that wants to improve their vocal range, perform solos and ensembles, audition for conference/district/all-state choir, or audition for admission into college music programs or music scholarships. Students that would like to major in music in college would benefit greatly from this course. Students in this class will be required to audition for All-District Choir, perform in a small group or solo at all 3 concerts and take a solo to District Contest.
FA Piano I H6413 (1 credit) Grade 9, 10, 11, 12 ** Limited to 16 students
This course is designed for those students who are interested in learning to play the piano in a group or solo setting. It is especially for the student who is interested in accompanying choirs, small ensembles, and solos. Music reading skills are necessary, as well as some rudimentary understanding of the piano. Students will be studying music theory and piano technique. Recitals will be required each semester. Owning your own piano or keyboard or at least having access to one for extra practice time is highly recommended. Students will be required to purchase or provide the Faber All-in-One Piano series.
FA Advanced Piano H6414 (1 credit) Grade 9, 10, 11, 12 ** Limited to 12 students
Prerequisite- Approval of director through interview and playing audition.
This course is designed for those students who have more advanced piano skills. They need to at least be in level 2 of the Alfred piano series. Students will be studying music theory and advanced piano technique. Recitals will be required each semester. Owning your own piano or keyboard or at least having access to one for extra practice is highly recommended. Students will be required to purchase or provide the Faber All-in-One Piano series.
