Strong reading, writing and vocabulary skills are recommended for Honors English I. Students will work toward literary analysis and problem solving skills through the reading of literary works including poetry, drama, short stories, novels, and informational texts. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking as well as grammar and usage skills, vocabulary development, and use of the writing process. This course follows Missouri Learning Standards for ELA.

EN English III H1033 (1 credit) Grade 11

English III concentrates on the development of reading comprehension, writing, listening, and speaking skills. The course samples a variety of American literature beginning with Early American writing, including a study of primary documents and chronicles. Vocabulary and grammar usage are emphasized as well as informational texts and the use of the writing process in argumentative papers. Students also explore career options and the readiness process. This course follows Missouri Learning Standards for ELA.
EN Honors English III/American Literature Classics H1034 (1 credit) Grade 11
Prerequisite-English I & II, approval of the instructor and a 3.0 GPA in English Classes. Strong reading, writing, and vocabulary skills recommended. NCAA Approved
Honors English III concentrates on the study of American writers and works beginning with Native American and Colonial, and continuing to the Modern era, and the development of writing skills. Students will read short stories, poetry, and novels as well as primary documents such as historical narratives and chronicles. Literary analysis, vocabulary skills, grammar usage, critical thinking, reading of informational texts, and various styles of writing are emphasized. A unit about college and career preparation will be covered. This course follows Missouri Learning Standards for ELA.

This course will explore literature (essays, poetry, drama, fiction, and informational texts) from a variety of ethnic cultures. This course will focus on the use of reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in professional settings that students will encounter post-graduation. EN Technical English H1043 (1 credit) Grade 12 (Possible for Grade 11 students attending ECC)

Technical English is the study and practice of writing, speaking and listening in professional settings. This course follows Missouri Learning Standards for ELA, but primarily focuses on analysis of workplace documents and skills necessary to communicate on the job, such as letters and memorandums, reports, proposals, and e-mails, as well as face-to-face communication.
EN Introduction to Literature LIT 101 H1063 (.5 school credit/3 college credit) Grade 11,12 (1st semester)
Prerequisite-English I & II Dual credit through State Fair community College. To be eligible to take this class, you MUST have a GPA of 3.0 and an ACT reading Score of at least a 18 or Accuplacer score of at least a 250 and ACT English score of at least 18 or Accuplacer score of at least 250 or above on writing skills before class begins. This course is a study of fiction, poetry, and drama. Special attention is given to literary terminology and critical analysis. Recommended but not required as a preparation for other courses in literature.

This course combines the process writing techniques acquired in English Composition I with critical reasoning and research skills to emphasize the real-life relevance in the act of managing information. Information is retrieved from a variety of sources and then evaluated, analyzed and combined with other sources to communicate ideas in meaningful and articulate writing. Basic computer skills are essential for successful completion.

This course is designed for students who enjoy writing. Students in Creative Writing will examine samples of various types of writing; then develop writing skills through the use of a writing process, including prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing. Types of writing may include autobiographical incident, literary analysis, short story creation, poem analysis, poetry creation, and writing a feature article.

EL It’s a Mystery to Me! H1048 (.5 credit) semester class Grade 9, 10, 11, 12
This course will investigate the genre of detective/mystery writing through the research of story elements, and vocabulary that are characteristic of the field. Critical thinking, deductive reasoning, character analysis, and the organization of facts will also be emphasized as well as reading and writing skills.
EL Literature and Film Adaptation H1049 (1 elective credit) Grades 9, 10, 11, 12
Have you ever read a book, watched the movie adaptation, and wonder why the two were so different? In this course, students will read a selection of works from poetry to novel, watch the corresponding film, and discuss key differences between them. Writing projects and assignments will focus on comparative, analytical, and persuasive writing concepts.
EL Literature and Film Adaptation II H1050 (1 elective credit) Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Grade of either A or B in Literature and Film Adaptation I, approval of the instructor. Strong reading, writing, and vocabulary skills are recommended.
This course continues the study of the adaptation process from book to film. In this course, more emphasis will be placed on analytical comparisons and will be more writing-intensive. This course will be available to anyone who received a passing grade Literature and Film Adaptation with a “B” or above or with special consideration and approval by the teacher.
