This is a semester class designed to prepare the individual to understand the nature, function, and significance of human relationships within the family/individual unit. It includes instructions in the concepts and principles related to changing family types; growth and development of positive interpersonal and family relationships; sexuality; ability to balance the worlds of work and family and preparation for marriage, parenthood and family life. The instructional emphasis is on the uniqueness of families and individuals, the development and socialization of the individual, and meeting the needs and interests of individuals and family members.
PAChild Development I H5062 (.5 credit) Grade 9,10,11,12
Students are introduced to child development, parenting and childcare concepts. Topics of study include readiness for parenthood, parenting styles, teen pregnancies, birth defects, and prenatal development.
PA Child Development II H5063 (.5 credit) Grade 9,10,11,12
Prerequisite- Child Development I
This class provides an advanced study in child development and guidance. The course will include the physical, social and intellectual development of children. Students will observe children in the pre-school and lower elementary to be able to recognize developmental stages of early childhood. Students will also be required to care for an infant simulator for 55 hours or complete an alternative assignment.
PA Housing Environments and Design H5054 (.5 credit) Grade 9,10,11,12
Students will be studying the principles of housing design. They will learn the basic design techniques, styles of houses, factors influencing housing choices and rent vs. buying. Students will also learn the elements and principles of good design.
PA Food Science H5081 (.5 credit) Grade 11,12 Limited to 20 students
Food Science is a semester class designed to teach students more advanced preparation techniques. We will evaluate and experiment with different cooking, food storage, base ingredients, techniques and research.
PA International Foods H5094 (.5 credit) Grade 11,12 Limited to 20 students
Prerequisite- Food Science
International Foods is a semester class designed to give students exposure to other cultures through food, as well as experience with food preparations. Special emphasis is given to nutritional needs, preparation techniques, availability of technology and modern conveniences, special spices, and insight into how geographic location affects food traditions.
PA Career Pathways for the Teaching Profession H5097 (1 credit) Grade 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite-Child Development
This class focuses on the general theory and practice of learning and teaching; the basic principles of educational psychology; school safety and health issues; and the social foundation of education activities; school safety and health issues; and the social foundations of education. Classroom observations will be completed.
PA Practicum in Teaching Pathway H5098 ( 1 credit) Grade 11,12
Prerequisite- Career Pathways for Teaching Profession
During class students will engage in a pre-professional teaching practicum. Students will spend the year out in classrooms observing, applying content, and actively teaching.
PA LIFE 101: Independent Living H5096 (.5credit) Grades 10, 11, 12
This fast-paced course explores the demanding life of the adult world and the realities of living on your own. Instruction will cover: goal setting, credit, food choices, cooking skills, healthy living, housing decisions, transportation, insurance, basic sewing skills, budgeting, banking, relationships, child development and real world decisions.
BUSINESS
PA Computer Applications H5421 (.5 credit) Grade 9, 10, 11 ,12 **Limited to 20 students
This course is designed to help student’s master beginning and advanced skills in the areas of word processing, spreadsheet applications, desktop publishing, multimedia, internet usage, and integrated software applications. This will encompass using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Forms. Seniors have preference in enrolling.
PA Introduction to Business H5432 (.5 credit) Grade 10,11,12
This one semester course is designed to introduce students to how business works in today’s society and to provide a foundation for other business courses. Content includes business functions such as accounting, management, marketing, and other consumer issues regarding money and money management, banking system and services, government’s role in business and technology in the business.
PA Accounting I H5472 (1 credit) Grade 10 (with teacher permission), 11, 12 ** Limited to 20 students
The study of accounting will contribute to a person’s ability to earn a living to his understanding of the economic activities of the business world, and to increase his competence in managing his personal business affairs. Selected problems for each chapter will be done on the computer. Two practice sets will be done during the year. Computerized Accounting will be incorporated into this class.

Photography is a semester course covering the basic concepts of digital photography including understanding and use of the camera, lens, and other basic photography equipment. The course will address aesthetic principles as they relate to composition, space, exposure, light, and color. Students will be required to photograph either Winter photo sessions or Spring photo sessions.
PA Intro to Video Production H5477 (.5 credit) Grade 9, 10, 11, 12 **Limited to 15 students
In this introductory class, students will learn to use various types of multimedia software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Moviemaker and other software applications to develop presentations. They will learn how to manipulate text, art and graphics, photography, animation, audio and video for presentations in various media formats.

Jobs for America’s Graduates is a career exploration and preparation program that provides a hands-on approach in exploring personal strengths and challenges as well as job attainment skills (cover letter, resume, job application, interviewing, etc.) and workplace “survival” skills. Students will work to build strengths in academic areas, time management, and communication. This full year, credited course involves individual assignments, team activities/projects, academic remediation support, service learning opportunities, guest speakers and field trips.
Marketing Education
PA Marketing I H5531 (1 credit) Grade 9, 10, 11, 12
This course is an introductory course in the field of marketing. Marketing involves all activities in the selling of products and services. We will be examining the following: marketing and economics concepts, marketing research, advertising and promotions, channels of distributions, marketing math as it relates to retail, the sales process, and target markets. Emphasis will be placed on the individual and numerous group activities that allow students to use the knowledge gained throughout the year-long class. Students are encouraged, but not required to join DECA (An Association of Marketing Students) to enhance their knowledge of marketing and participate in district, state and national contests.
PA Marketing II H5532 (1 credit) Grade 11, 12
Prerequisite- Marketing I & another higher level marketing course. Students are EXPECTED to join DECA and to participate in DECA competitions.
This year-long course is designed to allow students to take the information learned in Marketing I, Business Ownership and Management, Advertising & Public Relations, or Hospitality and Tourism and use it to solve business problems from the management point of view. Most activities will be “hands-on”, researching businesses and their promotional strategies and creating new strategies for the business. The second semester students will examine international business procedures. Students will participate in the actual sales process in the spring by selling space for the athletic program generated by DECA(Association of Marketing Students).
PA Business Ownership and Management H5523 (.5 credit) Grade 10, 11, 12
In this semester-long course, students will learn the basics of business ownership and how to run a retail business using a computer simulation (Restaurant Management). Other topics will include legal and ethical issues in business ownership, store layouts, inventory control, and advantages and disadvantages of business ownership. Students in this course have the opportunity to join DECA and compete at the district, state and international levels.
PA Advertising & Public Relations H5544 (.5 credit) Grade 10, 11, 12 (Offered 2nd semester)
In this course, the students will learn the basics about advertising, sales promotion and public relations. Most of the semester will be spent on projects, which allow students to use the skills they have gained through previous marketing classes. These projects will include the production of various types of advertisements as well as a public relations project of the student’s choice. Students will be able to use their creativity skills. Students will also have the opportunity to join DECA and compete at the district, state and international levels.
PA Marketing Internship H5526 (1 credit) or H5524 (2 credits) Grade 12
Prerequisite- Marketing I or another marketing course and currently enrolled in an upper level Marketing class MUST COMPLETE AN INTERVIEW WITH THE MARKETING COORDINATOR BEFORE SIGNING UP FOR THE COURSE.
This internship program allows seniors to come to school part of the day and work in an approved, marketing related job for the remainder of the day. Students can receive 1 or 2 credits for this work experience. THE MARKETING COORDINATOR AND THE EMPLOYER, WORKING TOGETHER, MONITOR THIS INTERNSHIP. Students are given assignments that allow them to tie their experiences to the classroom activities. ADVANTAGES OF THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM: The student is supervised. The employer signs an agreement with the school to employ the student. The employer and the teacher work together to give the students jobs and tasks that will enrich their learning. Credit can be earned towards graduation at the workplace.
PA Hospitality & Tourism H5522 (1 Credit) Grades 10, 11, 12 Must speak to the instructor (Mrs. Lehman) if you have NOT taken Marketing 1 prior to this course.
This program introduces students to the world of hospitality (hotel & lodging, food services & recreation) and tourism (convention center operations, tour planning, & recreational facilities). This course will be project-based while utilizing teamwork. Presentations will be the larger part of performance/assessment. The class will tour resorts/hotels, recreational facilities & food services to explore daily operations of each type of facility.
*Students in this course are expected to join DECA and compete at the district, state and international levels
INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY
PA Woods I / II H5211 (.5 credit each) Grade 9,10,11,12 ** Limited to 15 students
This class is designed to introduce students to the occupations and skills used in the world of cabinet and furniture making. Students will build mass production and personal projects made primarily of wood. Students will plan, estimate and construct the projects. Students will learn to safely use hand tools and power tools in the production of their projects. Students will need to have a set of safety goggles or glasses and must pay for the materials needed to produce the projects they make.
PA Advanced Woods H5222 (1 credit) Grade 10, 11, 12 **Limited to 15 students
Prerequisite- Woods I Students will be responsible for the cost of the projects. (Cost may exceed $100.00)
This class will use the power and hand tools on wood and wood related materials. Furniture design and construction will be covered in detail. Areas that will be covered are wood joints, abrasive papers, stains, and finishes. Projects: furniture with either drawers or doors or furniture with the instructor’s approval. The student may opt to refinish or restore a piece of furniture instead of building a project. The students will be responsible for finishing costs and repair materials.
PA Beginning Construction H5255Y (1 credit) Grades 10,11,12 9th grade with teacher recommendation Prerequisite would be woods 1 (9th graders would be approval from previous woods teacher)
Beginning construction provides students the opportunity to study principles, procedures, materials, and career opportunities in light construction. The student’s study home design, building codes, zoning ordinances, construction financing, concrete-masonry, structural framing techniques, rough and finish carpentry, electrical wiring, and plumbing and heating systems.
PA Agriculture Science I H5608 (1 credit) Grade 9
This course is designed for instruction in animal science, FFA, careers, leadership, welding and the development of a supervised agriculture experience project. Units include Animal Nutrition, Equine Science, Beef Production, FFA leadership, Arc Welding, Swine Production, etc. Students are encouraged to participate in the FFA Organization and will be expected to develop or continue their Supervised Agricultural Experience Project.
PA Agriculture Science II H5612 (1 credit) Grade 10
Prerequisite- Agriculture Science I
A course designed for instruction in plant and crop science, soils, entomology, horticulture, and/or forestry, and additional instruction in agricultural mechanics, careers, leadership, and agriculture experience. Students are encouraged to participate in the FFA Organization and will be expected to develop or continue their Supervised Agricultural Experience Project.
PA Agricultural Construction H5663 (1 credit) Grade 11,12
Prerequisite: Agriculture Science I and II and Beginning Welding
This is a project based shop class. All skills used in a welding shop will be taught. The student will be required to build a large project or several small projects. The instructor and the parents must approve the project plan before the project can be built. The student will provide the cost of all the materials except tools, welding supplies, and cutting supplies. Lumber and metal may be purchased through the school if the student so desires, however, it is not required. Failure to pay for any materials purchased from the school will result in the school keeping the project. The project will not be allowed to leave the school premises without full payment. Students are encouraged to participate in the FFA Organization and will be expected to develop or continue their Supervised Agriculture Experience project. Classroom supplies include electrodes and practice metal for learning to weld. It does not cover the cost of project construction.
PA Agricultural Structures (1 credit) Grades: 11, 12 ***Limit to 15 students
Prerequisite: Agriculture Science I and II
This is a teacher led, project based course that focuses on primarily wood projects. It will prepare students to construct and maintain agricultural structures and equipment. Develops basic skills such as tool identification, interpreting plans, calculating a bill of materials, and small gas engines, primarily focusing on four-cycle engines and some exploration of two-cycle machines.
A Conservation Natural Resources H5653 (.5 credit) Grade 10,11, 12
Prerequisite- Agriculture Science 1
A course that prepares students for activities in the conservation and/or improvement of natural resources such as soil, forages, oil, water, air forests, fish and wildlife for economic and recreational purposes. The overall goal for the Conservation Natural Resources curriculum: Agriculture encompasses the food, fiber, conservation, and natural resource system, employing over 20% of the nation’s workforce. Management of our natural resources, wildlife, and ecological systems are essential components in sustaining our environment. Students will develop an understanding of conservation practices utilized in the Agriculture and Natural Resources Industries. In addition, each student will be required to develop/continue a Supervised Agricultural Experience Project and keep a record book on the project.
PA Beginning Welding H5667 (.5 credit-semester class) Grades 10, 11, 12 **Limited to 15 students
Prerequisite- Agriculture I or teacher recommendation.
This would be an introduction course in the Ag Mechanics Shop. The course will focus on shop safety, equipment identification, arc welding, MIG welding.
PA Intermediate Welding H5671 (.5 credit-semester class) Grades 10, 11, 12 **Limited to 15students
Prerequisite- Beginning Welding
This class will be a continuation of Beginning Welding. Students will learn oxy-acetylene cutting, plasma cutting,and how to use the CNC Plasma cutting table. Students will build a small welding project. Students will be responsible for the cost of materials and supplies.
PA Animal Science H5666 (1 credit) Grades 11, 12
Prerequisite: Ag Science I and Ag Science II
Animal Science is an advanced course engaging students in hands-on laboratories and activities to explore the world of animal agriculture. Student experiences involve the study of animal anatomy, physiology, behavior, nutrition, reproduction, health, selection, and marketing. This course will also include the areas of food chemistry and nutrition, food additives, food packaging and labeling, evaluation of foods, food microbiology, food processing, food fermentation, principles of sanitation and quality control. This course is also used as an agriculture advocacy course to educate students on how our food gets from the farm to the table.
PA AG Leadership H5665 (1 credit) Grades: 10,11,12
Prerequisite: Ag. Science I and Ag. Science II (or teacher approval)
This course is for advanced students of agriculture. The course is designed for those students wanting to improve their leadership ability. Units will include, but are not limited to, public speaking, parliamentary procedure, leadership and personal development, FFA, and Career Development. It is required that all FFA officers take this course.
PA Nursery/Turf Landscape H5652 (.5 credit) Grades 10.11.12
Prerequisite: Ag Science 1 and Ag. Science II (or teacher approval)
This course develops a basic understanding of the principles and practices of nursery plants and the principles and practices of landscaping. The production of nursery plants will be used to demonstrate various procedures of their care. Landscape drawing will be created and some selected for use in creating various landscape projects.
PA Greenhouse Operation and Management H5666 (.5 credit) Grade 10, 11, 12 (2nd semester)
Prerequisite: Ag. Science I and Ag. Science II
The course develops a basic understanding of greenhouse techniques. The production of greenhouse crops will be used to demonstrate procedures such as plants started from cuttings, seeds, grafts, and layering. Students will manage their own crop as a greenhouse project.
PA Floriculture H5651 (.5 credits) Grades: 10, 11, 12 (1st semester)
Prerequisite: Agriculture I and Agriculture II
The floriculture class will explore careers in the retail flower business, principles of design, flower cuttings, floral design and the various aspects of this industry. Students will also be involved in the producing, caring for and sale of various houseplants and flower arrangements.
PA Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE)
Prerequisite- must have instructor approval
This course provides for the enrollment of students that are released on school time to complete a cooperative occupational experience in an approved training station in agriculture. A signed training agreement and training plan must be completed for each student. Students will be expected to develop or continue their Supervised Agricultural Experience Project.
