The UK & Weather
Year 1 - Geography - Autumn 1
Year 1 - Geography - Autumn 1
The Local Area
Understand where I live and where my school is in the local area, and use simple locational and directional language e.g. near, far, up, down, left, right, forwards and backwards.
Use a rain gauge to measure rainfall over a period of time.
Measure the depth of puddles using a stick and mark the levels using different coloured chalk.
Discuss where puddles have formed and why and observe changes in their size.
Observe shadows in the school grounds and draw around their chosen shadow (a tree, bench etc.) in chalk. Understand how shadows change colour and shape and how the sun and clouds impact this.
Create and use a wind streamer, using the basic compass directions to identify the direction of the wind.
The UK
Begin to use basic geographical vocabulary to refer to key human features of the UK: city, town, village, house and shop.
Locate the four countries of the UK and their capital cities on a UK map or atlas.
Identify and describe weather associated with the four seasons in the UK using relevant vocabulary: shower, drizzle, downpour, frost, gale, wind, breeze, gust, sunny, cloudy, and foggy.
Understand that weather differs across the UK and use weather forecast symbols to explain what the different weather is like on a particular day in London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.

In Reception, children describe their immediate environment (Vale School, Findon Valley and Worthing) using observation, discussion, non-fiction texts and maps. Children learn their address.
In Year 2, identify and describe weather associated with the four seasons in the UK including understanding a basic weather forecast including the vocabulary degrees and Celsius.
