The World
Understand the terms continent, ocean and seas; name and locate the world’s seven continents on a globe and on a map, including a developing understanding of the terms poles and equator.
Recognise and know the basic features of the different continents e.g. which continent we live in, which is the largest, which is the smallest.
Identify the location of hot and cold areas of the world focusing on Antarctica.
Identify that the North and South poles are cold and the equator is hot.
Locate the continents on globes and world political maps or atlases.

In Reception, children learn about different communities in different continents by looking at Christmas around the world.
In Year 2, children revise the different continents and name and locate the five oceans (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, Arctic).
