"Kiss the Fascists"
In 1931, after the first major electoral success of the Nazi party in the Weimar Republic, there was much debate about how to react amid the increasing polarization and political violence. Many communists insisted on fighting back: "Schlagt die Faschisten!" (Beat up the fascists!) was their motto. Traditional conservative parties, meanwhile, though they detested Hitler's vulgarity and populism, curried favor with the Nazis in hopes of improving their electoral chances. The German-Jewish satirist Kurt Tucholsky lambasted their hypocritical brown-nosing in this biting cabaret number.
Students in 305 provide a literal translation of the song with contextual notes, a stylistic translation that can be sung in English, and they also adapted the song to speak to the current cultural landscape in America of 2025.
