If your child attended a brick and mortar public or private school previously, it might not have been uncommon to discover a letter or announcement from the school in the book bag when your child came home. The school might also have used electronic communication and an automated call system for important messages.
In our world of online public education, nearly 100% of our communication is electronic. As a result, to ensure that you are informed promptly, it is important that you and your child monitor all forms of communication that we use to keep you informed. It is also important that you communicate with us to keep us informed.
Maintaining open channels of communication will help to ensure you and your child are receiving the support that you need from us, and it will help to ensure we are able to obtain information from you that we require to be effective in educating your child.
Open channels of communication will also ensure that you are informed in a timely manner about matters that require your attention and action. Here's why:
UVA's teachers are unable to make announcements to their students in person the way a classroom teacher can.
Administrators are unable to communicate with you swiftly by postal mail.
Most students have at least four teachers every semester. Each teacher needs to communicate with you and with their students to provide instructional support and to keep you, the Learning Coach, informed about developments in your child's courses.
Other educators (e.g., counselors, test coordinators) need to communicate with families in a timely manner throughout the school year.
___________
Electronic communication is essential.
We, too, have a responsibility to respond to you and your child in a timely manner. That has always been our goal, and it continues to be.
Phone calls are an integral part of working with our families. However, your child's teachers and counselors, your Learning Coach Support team, and UVA's administrators send electronic communications regularly as well. Electronic communication is the primary method of notifying your child and you about school and course announcements, etc. Staying connected with us in this manner is essential.
Canvas messaging and emails are sent by the faculty and administrators.
Dashboard announcements are posted in Canvas as well.
Remind is one of the communication platforms that teachers, administrators, and your Learning Coach Support team use. It is convenient and user-friendly. You receive messages via text and/or email, or you can install the Remind app on your mobile device.
Additional platforms (e.g., the Blynx ChatBot) are used as well.
NOTE:
UVA sets up your Remind account shortly before the semester begins. Existing Remind subscribers' UVA accounts must be created (or updated) as well. A
Existing Remind app subscribers are asked to wait until we create the UVA Remind accounts for new families before attempting to use the app. Attempting to make updates on your end can be problematic.
Your Learning Coach Support team will notify you when your Remind account has been created.
