When students are removed from the oversight of a classroom teacher, they experience a tremendous amount of freedom unless the Learning Coach steps in to fill the void. If you hold your child accountable to you for being engaged in school, for putting forth the effort to learn, for working with his or her teachers, and for completing all assignments every day on a daily basis, you will assist your child greatly in your role.
There are three categories of Learning Coaches and UVA students. Which category do you fall in?
You and your child are new to UVA this year.
Your child is a returning UVA student and you have an effective accountability system in place already.
Your child is a returning UVA student and you did not implement accountability measures previously or you question whether your approach was as effective as it could have been.
We have a section on student accountability in The Orientation Shoppe -- Hold Your Child Accountable -- that we encourage everyone to review regardless of the category you fall in. In the section, we explain the value of an accountability system with students of all ages and grade levels, we discuss types of motivation and when to use them, and we provide detailed suggestions on setting up an accountability system with our UVA students at home.
Please click the link above to review the section, and step through the pages on the topic of student accountability. We hope the tips that we have provided will inspire you to implement an accountability system with our students at home.
